T'was the Night Before Freedom

T'was the night before freedom
And all through the land
Many creatures were stirring
With a phone in hand

The Dem candidates
On the ballots they'd share
All hoped that each vote
Would be counted as fair

My teen son was nestled
All snug in his bed
With no thought that he
could be drafted then dead

On the lawn I heard
A faint piccolo
Whistling a tune
That I knew long ago

I sprang to the window
And peered out the screen
You wouldn't believe
The vision I'd seen

T'was my Uncle Sam
In red, white, and blue
Playing that tune
That I knew I knew

I called out to him,
"That's lovely. It's, uh…"
He looked up. "You know it.
"It's America."

Then I remembered
The land of the free
How could I forget
What we used to be?

He rose to his feet
And gave me a wave
And walked away playing
The home of the brave

I settled in bed
And scribbled a note
The note I wrote read,
"We'd all better vote."
