Tweety braces himself for Santorum's defeat: "He'll give out a Churchillian address, I expect"
'Hardball with Chris Matthews' for Nov. 2
Read the transcript to the Thursday show
Guests: Larry Sabato, Charlie Cook, Stuart Rothenberg, Howard Fineman, Andy Card, Tony Perkins, Mike Barnicle, Kate O‘Beirne

MATTHEWS: And what about the best concession speech of the night, what do you think? Santorum? He‘ll give out a Churchillian address, I expect.

O‘BEIRNE: I think Senator Santorum, should that happen, will be really worth listening to, and I assume Bob Casey Jr. won‘t be. He has not been yet during the whole campaign...

MATTHEWS: This is funny! This is funny!

O‘BEIRNE: ... worth listening to. I think the Republicans probably hold Tennessee, although I agree with people who talk about what a terrific candidate Harold Ford has been.

MATTHEWS: Yes.

O‘BEIRNE: I think Jim Talent wins in Missouri. It‘s, as you know, a barely sort of red state. They have really close races.

MATTHEWS: He‘s pretty impressive.

O‘BEIRNE: But a lot of Republicans like their chances where they have got their candidates within two or three points, because they think, as you heard, their ground game can deliver.

Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 09:58 AM by hatrack
74 Somerset Gardens
Mercystoke on Hogdown
Wessex W9

Perhaps he could retire to a small cottage at this very same address and STFU?

2. A "Churchillian" concession speech? Like when the Germans forced Britain to surrender
...and accept "terms" when Britain lost the Battle of Britain?

7. I though the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
John Belushi said so. Ghandi forced Great Britian to surrender after the Mongols under Sun Tzu invaded Normandy and defeated the Sacred Band of Thebes and the Three Musketeers.

Ghandi, Germany, easy to confuse, you see.

24. After the general elections of 1945 when Churchill's party
was thrown out of power. George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth wanted to give him an Order as consolation to which Churchill is said to have replied that the people had just given him the Order of the Boot.

Just wait until after Jan, when all them un-employed ex-Reps and ex-Senators start hangin' around the Stage Door over at MSNBC, CNN, FAUX, et. al.

Ten-to-one; they'll have to setup rope lines around the studio just to keep order.

26. May I remind everyone that Kate O'Beirne's husband, Jim...
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 01:26 PM by CBHagman
...has helped created the disaster in Iraq by using politics, not competence and experience, as grounds for selecting staff for on-the-ground work in reconstruction and the like.

Some of us had heard, via an earlier Washington Post article, that that was the case -- i.e., selecting staff without the right skill sets, but it was recently confirmed by a new book on the Iraq debacle.

Thanks to Rajiv Chandrasekaran for getting this story out.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0918/dailyUpdate.html

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/16/AR2006091600193_pf.html

To pass muster with O'Beirne, a political appointee who screens prospective political appointees for Defense Department posts, applicants didn't need to be experts in the Middle East or in post-conflict reconstruction. What seemed most important was loyalty to the Bush administration.

O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000? Do you support the way the president is fighting the war on terror? Two people who sought jobs with the U.S. occupation authority said they were even asked their views on Roe v. Wade .

Many of those chosen by O'Beirne's office to work for the Coalition Provisional Authority, which ran Iraq's government from April 2003 to June 2004, lacked vital skills and experience. A 24-year-old who had never worked in finance -- but had applied for a White House job -- was sent to reopen Baghdad's stock exchange. The daughter of a prominent neoconservative commentator and a recent graduate from an evangelical university for home-schooled children were tapped to manage Iraq's $13 billion budget, even though they didn't have a background in accounting.

The decision to send the loyal and the willing instead of the best and the brightest is now regarded by many people involved in the 3 1/2 -year effort to stabilize and rebuild Iraq as one of the Bush administration's gravest errors. Many of those selected because of their political fidelity spent their time trying to impose a conservative agenda on the postwar occupation, which sidetracked more important reconstruction efforts and squandered goodwill among the Iraqi people, according to many people who participated in the reconstruction effort.

Frankly, I wouldn't trust Kate O'Beirne to tell me whether it was raining outside.

27. Alan Greenspan & Andrea Mitchell; How unbiased is she??
This one also struck me too: James Carville & Mary Matalin. I don't understand the cross-pollination of people who are extremely political. Personally, the more "republican" any of my dates became, the less attractive became.

36. We don't have voting machines in the UK now, let alone in 1945; and I hope it stays that way.
But I do think it's ironic that this is Santorum's first response, once the tables are turned on him.

Churchillian? I think NOT!
