Condi: "Oh, I just — I can't even believe that people would say such a thing. Come on."
Secretary of State Rice on Saddam verdict, Iraq War, Midterm Elections

Monday, November 06, 2006

CAVUTO: Could I ask you of all the political questions? One is that this (the Saddam verdict) was timed right before our midterm elections.

RICE: Oh, I just — I can't even believe that people would say such a thing.

Come on. The Iraqis have been in this process. They have been losing people who have been under threat from terrorists, who didn't want this trial to go forward. Any number of judges have had to step down. These are brave people who have carried out this process.

And it is an insult to them to suggest that it was somehow timed to something American. It — it's — in fact, it's a bit self-referential for — for my taste. This is the Iraqi process. And we should congratulate them on it.

CAVUTO: On another issue of timing, Madam Secretary, last week, at this time, I was speaking to Vice President Cheney. And he had wondered aloud whether the increase in insurgent attacks was at all timed to our midterm elections. And he suspected they were.

Do you?

RICE: Well, I suppose it's possible.

6. Latest Rovian strategy ----just act incredulous when asked
an uncomfortable question. Tony Snow does it all the time lately, and so does Rumsfeld. They try to make the questioner look like a chump, rather than admitting the obvious but inconvenient truth. I'm glad Cavuto juxtaposed the two issues!

8. She did not deny it, nor did Tony Snow. It's a classic Nixon strategy.

18. Right, there was NO WAY Cheney would have meant that about torture
but Snow knew exactly what Kerry meant but now Condi can imagine anyone would think THAT (gasp)

Amazing.

Well we finally have a Condi sighting. She has been more hidden that even Hastert (btw Drudge and the RW have a whole "where's Pelosi?" thing going even though she is all over the media)

11. So the insurgents,
who are ad hoc, loosely organized (comparatively) militias who operate in the shadows, are timing their attacks to coordinate with US elections, but our (not so much lately) puppet government would never do such a thing.

I swear, the average neocon brain is a pile of mush. No wonder they thought Terry Schiavo was a fully functioning human being.

Scott Horton, Chair of the International Law Committee at the New York Bar Association and a member of the Iraqi Bar Association, was talking to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! yesterday about this.

SCOTT HORTON: Well, I think the evidence against Saddam Hussein is clear and impressive and, in fact, I think we have to salute Human Rights Watch, which did a tremendous job over many years of documenting the violations, including the Dujail incident. So I think people are relieved to see that sentence.

But when we come to the fairness and legitimacy of the proceedings, there, there are very, very deep concerns, and I think it’s all wrapped around the timing of the announcement of the verdict, which was very carefully planned to be the last print media day, so we would have headlines above the fold in American newspapers on the day before Americans go to vote in very, very important mid-term elections.

AMY GOODMAN: Who decides this?

SCOTT HORTON: Well, I think the Americans decided that. And in fact, I can tell you from my own experiences dealing with Iraqi courts, the calendar of the court was fixed directly by the Americans. One Iraqi judge I discussed this with told me that, “Look, we are autonomous and independent in many regards, and the calendar is not one of them. The calendar is fixed by when the Americans want us to convene the court and when they produce the witnesses so that we can interrogate them and conduct hearings.”

And this is particularly true for the so-called Special Tribunal. We need to note that this was constructed, arranged from the beginning with American taxpayer money, $138 million put in to funding it; a large professional staff; the regime crime unit attached to the U.S. embassy orchestrating every aspect of this case, compiling claims, putting them together, even making the physical plan and layout for the courtroom.

16. Yes they could
In the early 70s a hijacker threatened to dive an air liner into the Oak Ridge nuclear fuel processing facility,
A little further back the Japanese demonstrated the technique against the US Navy.

21. Exactly...
...and that's why I posted the specific excerpt. It really is two versions of the same question: Situations orchestrated around an event. The one that is "damaging" (manipulation of Saddam verdict as a payoff for Bush) is "bad"...the other (rise in violence offers proof that ony the Republicans can "protect" us) is "good."

The thing that amazes me is that no one is supposed to see through any of this. Condi and Rummy and Evil Dick and Rove and Junior are all brilliant strategists, and we are simply the sheep who follow them. Hopefully by the end of today they'll know just how wrong they are.

23. do I think the timing is suspect?
let's just say it came at a convienent time. and according to a blurp mentioned on the news radio this morning - saddam's appeal should be rendering their findings ...ummmm in January '07... ummm....SOTU...????

what should be more disturbing to Condi - is the fact that such a question NEEDS to be asked. That anything and everything the bushies are doing results in being questioned as to it's political motives.

-- bush takes a dump: why did the WH announce that, what's the gain, what is the politic angle
