Absentee ballots were a snap, with a qwerty keyboard.

I did not know that Cook County (illinois) had a referendum on removing the Illinois Nat Guard from IraqNam.

308. Ditto on the sequoia machine in Kansas
BUT, at least two people were turned away while I waited in line. Apparently the state printed the wrong precinct and address on their voter registration card and they were forced to drive to another location to vote.

Also, TONS of people waiting for paper ballots. I decided to try the machine (voting Dem in a red state is fairly useless anyway -- although I have high hopes that mini-Hitler Phill Kline will be ousted), but the line for paper was twice as long as the line for the machines.

With the new photo ID requirements here in Ohio it will be interesting to see how much confusion it causes but there didn't seem to be any problems this morning.

Had to drive nearly 50 miles to the county courthouse since they closed our local small precinct. Today we are organizing car pools for the older folk near us that have been disenfranchised.
Keeping it real out here in Western Colorado where we will elect a Democratic Governor and hopefully remove Musgrave from office!

12. Voted by mail back in Sept.
My prediction

Democrat Gabby trounces religious wingnut repuke Randy Graf (House seat that Kolbe left)

On sad note though Jim Pederson narrowly is defeated by bush loyalist and religious wingnut Jon Kyl.

Oh well though, one thing about Kyl is that he does pay attention to the masses. Even if he wins, if he sees that his victory was slim and that across the country dems took home the gold he just might change his tune a little to our benefit...

17. I voted in Brooklyn, NY at about 7:20AM
I was the ninth person in my district to vote and my wife was number 10.

We have those really, really old machines that are huge and metal and weigh a ton. They're the kind where you flip the switch and pull the big lever when you're done.

I was voting for Democratic candidates in the Working Families Party column and my switches were stuck and it wouldn't allow me to vote. It took some of the workers there a little finagling but eventually it worked and I was able to vote. My wife went into the same booth after me and had no problems at all.

Anyway - In New York Hillary will win in a landslide as will Spitzer and my congressional representative Nydia Velasquez. Hopefully Alan Hevesi will weather this storm about his wife and her driver - it's nothing really and is a mostly manufactured scandal. I trust Hevesi and hope he wins. Also, I casted a protest vote for Ken Diamondstone over Martin Conner and I voted for all the Democratic Judges!

Well, that's it. Now to make some GOTV calls for Moveon.org and wait for the results to come in.

Oh, and I can't forget to take my son to get his flu shot - will somebody remind me to do that? His appointment is at 11:45. JUST KIDDING! no i'm not :)

Voted first thing this morning. Had the usual "sweet old lady" election workers (who weren't too happy to hear how easy it is to make a computer say one thing in front and do the opposite in back). Nothing went wrong that I could see (at least on the front end).

The thing I noticed most was that everyone seemed so happy to be voting! Hello's and greetings all around, discussions at the coffee place on the other end of town when I went to buy my "I voted" coffee treat ...

Change is in the air, folks.

25. I was at the polls bright and early
Too bad the polls didn't open bright and early. They opened ten minutes late and then they couldn't get their electronic cards to work right. People were complaining about being late to work, but no one left. There was a lot of wondering out loud if these people could count the votes correctly if they couldn't even open on time and get the machines to work.

This is in a rural Pennsylvania district that has never in the 15 years I've voted there had problems.

31. It was sweet.
There were Democrats on EVERY row of the ballot. I flipped the levers slowly, to savor it. Then I pulled the big lever to open the curtain and register my vote, heard the "ding" that indicated that my votes had been counted, and it was sweet. Sweet, I tell you. There was a spring in my step afterward as I perused the offerings of the little old ladies running a bake sale at the other end of the room. I bought some peanut butter cookies, got in my car, and sped off to work. As I drove, I noticed that everyone else was driving a little faster than usual, not as if they were in a hurry, but as if they were in a really good mood.

38. North Kansas City reporting
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 08:31 AM by dumpbush
The wife and I were #15 & 16. The poll workers are expecting a BIG turnout today! Lots of things on the Missouri ballot: Raising the state minimum wage, denying pensions to politicians convicted of felonies, stem cell initiative, taxing tobacco.
The rethug state legislature tried to pass a law that you had to show a valid picture ID as well as your voter registration card, but the Sec. of State (A Dem) shot it down. We were not asked to show a valid ID, hurray! No more straight-party voting here. The state leg's did pass that. Oh well, as somebody posted here already, each time I voted Democratic, I was thinking, "Take THAT *!"
So let's get out there and take this country back. The party that cares. The Democratic Party!

40. why do I always seem to have a confrontation with a Republican at the polls?
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 08:28 AM by wyldwolf
I'm back. The line was longer than I've ever seen it at my precinct - longer even than the Presidential election of 2004. One woman, who stood about half a foot taller than me, had a stack of Republican literature she was pretending to read. What she was, in fact, doing was holding it up for others to read. I nicely mentioned to her that she wasn't allowed to have it in the voting precinct. She glared down at me over her bifocals for a moment and continued displaying her (ahem!) "wares."

"Fine," I thought. "I'll take it up with the poll manager."

And I did. The poll manager, however, was a bit intimidated when the woman shrieked at him and stared like a Deer in headlights when she asked loudly, "Do you want me leave?"

Now I've never been one to be intimidated by 6'5" women in bifocals, especially those of the Republican variety, so I answered for the poll manager. "You can stay or you can go but you're not going to keep that literature in here."

The poll manager looked relieved and told her he'd keep if for her behind the election materials table. She practically threw it at him and then, again, gave me that patented old woman glare above the bifocals.

Here is the deal, people. Republicans have gotten used to doing pretty much whatever they please. Usually, people just don't want to confront them. But this type of activity, even as mild as this case was, begs to be confronted and the only way we win is to call them on it.

41. I voted!!! In VA - Go Webb
We had paper ballots in Loudoun County VA.

The lines for l-z were pretty long but a-k was short.

That nasty anti-gay marriage amendment was on there and I have heard the way it is worded it will hose domestic partner abuse cases.

Of course I voted no who gives a fuck if gay people want to get married let them!! Its a damn issue of equal protection under the law for goodness sakes.

Anyway, Webb's name was NOT cut off on the paper ballot. Straight Dem ticket for me and a lot of votes allocating new money to schools and fire stations and stuff like that I voted yes for.

I was lucky the count machine on the paper ballot rang up the counter on my vote so I got to kind of almost sort of see that my vote was counted right away.

w00t!

That is a lot for a mid-term election where the Dem Gov is killing his opponent in the polls, our 2nd Dist Congressman DINO will sail to victory and there are no local races to spark turnout. I interpret it as a "Call to Arms" by the citizenry of this country. I hope so.

50. An enthusiastic, hopeful crowd in Cornwall, VT
My wife & I just voted in our little town of about 1,100, just south of Middlebury. There was also a fine selection of pies and cakes at the election day bake sale, to benefit the Congregational Church across the road. The sun is up high enough to be seen above the Green Mountains to the east. It's a beautiful day; voters are plentiful. It felt SO great to be there and get a PAPER ballot and a #2 pencil, with all those fine candidates (most of whom I've met). I can assure you that while it may not be a total sweep for the Dem's/independents here in Vermont, we ARE going to send some serious and articulate peace mongers to the new Congress!

57. I voted - turnout high! (VA-11)
I've voted at the same place the last six elections, and every other time I've been able to pretty much walk up to a machine. I actually had to wait about 45 minutes to vote at 7:00 AM. I've never been so happy to wait in line! Hopefully this means Tom Davis is also in trouble?!

:woohoo:

I also had a 45 minute wait at 7 am in VA-11. I' heard from co-workers of long lines in Springfield, Arlington and Alexandria too. One poll worker told a friend that she had never seen this kind of turnout in 25 years. I think that's a good sign for our side.

59. First vote in my ED at 6:10 or so..
voting in NYC always has a sideshow. I was the first in the door just after 6AM and watched the poll characters..uh, workers do their thing. One octogenarian, several younger people and a cop whom I felt a bit sorry for. (I don't know if this is done elsewhere, but in NYC, there is always a police officer on duty at the polls.) I saw a notice at the sign-in desk which emphasized that only people with "IDR" shown after their name in the sign-in book should be asked for id, with a longish list of what qualified as ID.

When I went into the booth, and tried to move the 'master lever' to the right to start the process, it didn't move. In my enthusiam to vote, I then gave it a good yank and had the entire booth jump several inches to the right lol. I asked for help. (There was some tab that had to be removed in the turn-of-the-century machines we use here, and that hadn't been done yet.)

I voted for the big statewide races on the Working Families party column; several local officials including our Democratic city councilman, asked for us to do that, in an effort to highlight the need for reasonable housing in NYC. (I live in Stuyvesant Town, which just got sold off in the most costly real estate transaction in the history of the US.)

The 6AM sky was periwinkle blue and after I voted, a very pretty sunrise was taking place.

though 3 out of 6 machines were down when I was at my precinct this morning.

As far as I know, no one's been negatively affected by that, aside from having to wait slightly longer (and it wasn't a long wait). We also have the option of doing an optical scan ballot, and there were about 10 stations to fill those out.

Voted for every dem but one - just so it wouldn't be straight ticket. The auditor has been doing a pretty good job going after the thugs in our school district who misappropriated funds.

One of the guys who was out shaking hands and handing out literature for Dems was someone I've known for years. He said he has switched from Repub to Dem because of everything our country has been thru since 2000. We gave him a big hug!

Turnout was great and there were a ton of new faces at the desks and monitoring the voting machines!

98. Voted in Central Maine (Waterville)
Simple optical machines where I actually felt my votes were counted...voted a straight Democratic ticket (of course!!!). Wasn't too busy, but it was around 9:15 when things generally drop off a bit...Found most of the city people for sheriff, treasure, etc. didn't even have a Republican running...

I think Dems will do great here...Of course, unfortunately, Snowe will win again as senator...her reputation as a moderate is pretty much cemented here...I've told folks both about her voting for Roberts & Alito (i.e. her voting for two anti-abortion foes when she's well known as pro-choice proving to me that she's no moderate, and will vote the party line before what's good for the country...). I've converted a couple over (especially once I've explained how the majority party brings forth the issues through committee...). But, unfortunately, I think she's a lock...otherwise, Dems are gonna win big in Maine!!! And TABOR (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) looks to be voted down...we'll see on that one :)

I didn't vote for Snowe either, although, I think you're right, she's a lock. I actually used to like her, until this administration came to Washington, and she proved herself to be just another party hack. I was actually very disappointed in her for that. Ah well...

Voted at around 8:00 this morning. No problems, VERY few R's on the ballot :), and like you, I'm hoping to see TABOR go down in flames.

I was appalled at how many libertarian candidates I had to hold my nose and vote for where there was no democratic candidate, just to vote against the republican, and at how many races I just skipped because a republican was running unopposed. Still, I got to vote for Chris Bell and David van Os!

There were 2 out of 3 touch screen machines running. There were 5 people there and I was in and out in under 5 minutes - more people than I've seen there in several years, so hopefully this means turnout will be pretty good. I voted straight D except for state rep where the only choice was R and write in. I was really tempted to go write in, but in TN write in candidates have to register with the election comission to be counted and I didn't want to take any chance that my other votes would be voided.

What a day! I have waited 14 years for a day like today. The polling station was PACKED, despite the nasty weather (rain and cold). I live in a safe district, Michigan 5, Dale Kildee (Yes, THAT Dale Kildee, from the Foley scandel...you can't BUY that kind of advertising!), but as you may know, the Govs race is close, and nasty here, and Debbie Stabenow is in a bit of a fight, though I think she is pretty safe. Everything was running smooth. We use optical scanners with a paper trail, so I feel pretty good about that as well. Lots of women, lots of Union people (I think today is a union holiday).

115. I Voted in Omaha, NE!!!
Especially pleased to place a vote for Jim Esch, running against Lee Terry, for Nebraska's 2nd congressional district. Go Jim!

No problems at the polls--pretty busy, but no one had to wait very long. Seemed to be running smoothly.

I'm planning to volunteer this afternoon for the Esch campaign, but we'll see--I couldn't find a babysitter. :)

First-time voting in person. Voting via absentee ballot (2004) was definately easier. In Anne Arundel county they are having problems getting the machines working, including where I voted, but they did get them working by the time it was my turn to vote. I can only hope my vote is counted. I hope the people before me who had to use provisional ballots get their votes counted.

138. I voted, and had a pleasant surprise.
Our local veterinarian was coming out as I went in. I had parked beside his car at the middle school...me and my dusty Kerry/Edwards bumpersticker.

I was sorry to see him leaving because I'd wanted to chat him up some.
He'd voted for * twice, and we'd agreed to disagree because he's a damn good vet and my animals aren't political.

He waited for me outside. He waited outside because he wanted to tell me that he'd voted against every republican on the ticket because "they'd all gone bad".

That's my exit poll. Small sample, I know, but I'm liking what I'm seeing.

:toast: Here's to common sense, Brad!

Straight Democratic, with the exception of 1 Green party.

Diebold machine. I verified the paper ballot carefully. No apparent problems.

An elderly man next to me asked the poll worker (loudly) how to vote straight ticket. He said (again, very loudly) 'Democratic!!' (This is Utah, mind you, the reddest of the red).

I went at 10:00 am. Out polling location had 12 working Diebold touchscreens and I waited in line 40 minutes. There's usually no wait.

Got to get them started when they're young.

At 10:30 it was busy at the polls, but the wait wasn't too bad. Baby only got a little cranky in the booth. Everything went smoothly, but, of course, I have no way to know that my vote will be counted as I cast it.

I voted at Mill Creek Towne E.S. around 11:30 am, along with my 20-year-old daughter. There was no line. But before we had finished voting, the line was up to 8 people and started growing.

It helps when your spouse is a poll watcher. I called him on the cell and he said there was no line, so we zipped right over. Dave said there had not been any problems so far, and that all was going smoothly.

I vote in my apartment building.
There's a voting booth in the lobby.
neat, huh?

It's mechanical.

There was no line. My friend and I were the only ones there.
Two check-in people and an election supervisor.

One other advantage is that the 300-ft rule bans campaigning and campaign literature throughout the 13-story building.

I know... I'm lucky.

Edit
I was not asked for ID. Just a signature.
There was a poster that clearly showed what the inside of the booth would look like.
There were cheez-its and little donuts there. I did not partake.

221. Everything went swimmingly - mostly.
I walked over the my polling station, presented my military ID and was asked for my driver's license, instead. I presented that, was given my ballot(s) (two pages long in AZ this year.) I had already filled out my sample ballot, so I just copied everything over and was done in a few minutes. I went at about 10:40 a.m.. There was no line. There were three other people voting and there were five poll workers there. When I was finished I put my ballots through the reader and I was number 379 and 380. I then walked home. It's a beautiful 79 degrees Fahrenheit here right now. A beautiful day to vote! I can't wait for tonight!

Whom I had been told wasn't up for re-election this cycle.

There was a sign up down the road that said show Trent Lott your thanks on November 7. So I surely did. Just not in the way they intended. Heheh.

It surely gave me heebie-geebies to use that diebold machine but it seemed to register okay and the printout printed my vote correctly. Although I didn't get a receipt, there WAS a printed copy of my vote.

Interestingly, when I walked in, I walked in with a guy who said he came here because his wife was working there.

Only afterwards did I start to think -- was she letting him vote at her site -- and he would vote again at their 'real' site???

I asked when we were walking in if he was a demo or repub -- he said repub. (We were joking around about having no one to vote for.)

But I think my little precinct is having a heavier turnout so far than in the 2004 presidential race. More people had already signed and voted by ten this morning than were on the list at 3 p.m. in 2004. Go figure.

Everyone here was smiling, too. It's nice to go in and chat with your neighbors and ask them how the machine's behaving and have them tell you, so far, so good. Our little county always goes Dem, still it's a machine, and even though we're probably too small for them to fool with, I'm always a little wary.

249. My Experience Today
(this was originally posted in another "unofficial" thread)

I made a major move last summer, so this was my first time voting in my new area. I live in De Forest, WI, an exurb of Madison (Hail Satan!)

I voted on my way to work, got there at 8:15am. There was the longest line I've ever had to wait in to vote. Not quite out the building. This was could've just been the "before work" crowd, but there seemed to be a pretty good cross section of population there, young, old and everything in between. I was in line for about 20 minutes.

This picture (taken on my crappy camera phone)is from about two-thirds of the way to the back, looking toward the front.

There seemed to be a lot of first-time voters there asking questions. The guy putting his ballot (optical scan) into the reader in front of me stopped and asked me if we were supposed to sign it anywhere. I simply said "no", resisting the urge to point out how illegal that would be.

In line, an elderly man was asking about his wife who had trouble walking. The poll worker looked her up in the book, saw that she was registered, and informed the man that if he brought her to the polling place, they would deliver a ballot to her in the car so she wouldn't have to stand in line.

All in all, I think my observations are indications of good things to come, at least from my area. The turnout seemed high, a lot of first-timers, and people going through some considerable inconvenience to vote.

Cross your fingers, I'm crossing mine.

What so many people don't get is that it's not necessarily about the machines themselves, that just one part of the total package, IT'S ABOUT THE TABULATING!

We need to keep educating Dem politicians and all election fraud groups to remember this is the big one - programming the tabulators to change the counts - that they use if all the other techniques fail to give them a winner.

IT'S ABOUT THE TABULATING!

We are an all vote-by mail county. we're talking about a 100-year flood, but I voted two weeks ago.

First time ever voting a Party-line vote. anyplace where there was only one candidate running (and they were a R), I wrote in 'Eric Cartman' (think South Park), as Mickey Mouse is a Republican.

279. Here in Lawrence, Kansas, we have just changed from penciled
paper ballots to inked ones. I hope that doesn't mean some Diebold machine is scanning them. But at least we have paper ballots to turn to in case of a recount.

Of course, Lawrence is blue anyway.

295. I got a surprise (Pinellas County FLorida)
I went to vote, and did without problem. They even had chairs this time (long ballot). My polling place was in a Mormon church (stake/ward/whatever) at one time and we managed to get that changed because they were having the voting in the actual worship room (using the altar as a table no less). Now it's in an evangelical church and they have changed the access around so you have to walk through the actual church to get to the fellowship hall. But that's not my major complaint.

I then rode my bicycle over to the community center in the heavily minority northeast side of town to see if the Republicans were making a nuisance of themselves. There was no polling place there! The (republican controlled) elections office consolidated that polling place with one on the westernmost edge of the upper east side of town. OK, so we aren't talking the Bataan death march to get from one place to the other, but it still smells funny.

I'll be making the rounds again this afternoon.

474. In NY I voted for the Dem on the Working Families Line (mostly)

NY has many of the same candidates also on other party lines, a dem could also be on working families, Green, liberal, and Independent , a repug could be on repug and conservative, the total vote is what counts here. For the 2 sure wins Hillary and Spitzer I kind of threw away my vote and to keep the Socialist Workers on the ballot in the future I voted for them. not that I really would like them to win but it sends a message. The real reason I voted for the dems on the working families line, sends a message that supporting corporate america is not how you get my vote.

This might be deleted as it's not a DU straight dem support vote, but that's how I voted. The working families 99% of the time endorse the Dem candidate.

311. Okay, just got back from the polls: voted straight Democratic ticket....
...no luxury this year of "voting for the person": this election is too important so it was Democratic across the board regardless of what I thought about the individual. Which was easy, because the party put up some really good candidates this year.

Had eight state questions/ballot initiatives: voted progressive on all but one of them (the one I voted reactionary on would diminish property values in my area).

There had already been 600+ voters at my polling place (there is a counter on the machine that takes our ballots), which is nearly unprecedented for my neighborhood/precinct.

I have a feeling it's going to be an excellent night for Democrats! I am certain we will take the House of Rep., and am very hopeful for the Senate to turn Democratic also! I think we can do it. Exciting times.

K & R.

377. I voted. Chicagoan here.
I live in Chicago and in the precinct I live in, you were given a choice...

1) Touch screen. Hell no

or

2) You were given a large paper ballot (the thing looked like a menu) with a list of candidates on both sides....and a pen. You were then instructed to fill in the arrows next to the candidate of your choice. I'd never seen this kind of voting before. In 2004, it was a punch ballot. The 2nd alertnative was time consuming but...it was vastly better than the touch screen.

Also on the ballot...a resolution urging the United States to begin an immediate pullout of troops from Iraq. That was great voting for that.

399. Entire family voted Democrat, all races throughout Jersey
We're talking some die hard Republicans who are enraged at what Bush and his Republican rubber heads have done to this country. People at my polling place were visibly determined to vote. There were large numbers (for my town) of people who Republicans never seem to invite to their little events (or really even care about) - like African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and lots of younger people. I've never seen anything like it.

The two Democratic poll workers - there are two Republicans and two Democrats (and for the first time four (4) young polyglots speaking assistants who were greeting voters with instructions in English or Spanish or Irish or Korean (?) - were smiling broadly. Two older women who have been at my poll for at least 30 years looking like all those years when you couldn't find anyone to even offer to help set up the polling station were just overcast days compared to this day. All of the poll workers were fussing over the assistants like they were their grandchildren.

I really feel like I could die now having done at least something for my kids and grandkids to rid this country of selfish, criminal, arrogant, unqualified, hate-filled, elitist, dishonest, lying, self-possessed, do or say anything regardless of the truth or the decent people it hurts politicians (Republicans) and their supporters.

It is Independence Day!

404. I was released from the hospital at 10:15 pm last night (so I could vote today).
Voted Straight Dem, as did my mother, and one of her best friends. I got to find out the judicial candidates for all of us (which are non-partisan here) so we could vote Dem there, too. My husband is voting on his way home from work today. The election workers all said it had been "steady" all day long; on the way out I talked to a "former lifelong Republican" who voted straight Dem except for one candidate who was a personal friend for a local office.

People are not happy with the current administration. We even talked about how a local sheriff (R) who I have previously voted for is now running for Senate, and no way would I be voting to send another Republican to Washington. She said she knew him, too, but didn't vote for him either for the same reason. We both agreed that giving the Dems the majority was the best way to get things straightened up, but if they blow the opportunity, they're toast.

(By the way, the hospital was a week long stay because of hyperemesis (which means 'can't stop puking') due to my ongoing twin pregnancy. The babies are fine, and I'm on a fabulous drug that is really helping. We found out we are having one of each! Woo Hoo!)

I voted shortly after 2, as per the great suggestion somebody made to try for off-peak hours if your schedule is flexible, as mine is. Oddly enough, we're having very similar weather here as we did during the '04 debacle - overcast and rainy, except that it's warmer today. I have too clear of a memory of standing in the freezing rain for hours, two years ago. I wasn't sure what to expect this time, and all the posts about problems and disenfranchisement were making me majorly nervous - I was geared for battle, anticipating long lines and arguements with poll workers or challengers; I had my driver's license with me as usual, but also had dug up several utility bills with my address, and several other forms of ID just in case. Also had those phone numbers handy in case of problems.

When I got to the polling place, there were maybe 20 people there, counting the poll workers. For a midterm election, that's more than I've ever seen there before, but it still wasn't exactly crowded. My name was there on the rolls of eligible voters, and my driver's license was fine as an ID (as it seemed to be for everyone else I saw, too). Voting was on a touch screen, and the poll worker who pointed me to my machine was pretty good about explaining how to use it and double-check before casting the vote. I asked if there had been any problems with the machines today, and he said no. Everything went pretty quick and smooth, and I got my cool "I Voted" sticker to put on my coat.

On the way out, I noticed one of my neighbors was there as a poll worker. She said there had been a long line in the early morning, before work hours, but then it thinned out. She too said there had been no problems with the machines, to her knowledge. Another neighbor came in as I was going out the door, and I mentioned to him that the machines were apparently doing okay. He said something to the effect that he sure hoped so, not like during the last time - which leads me to believe he's a Dem and informed about the voting issues.

Overall, a very positive experience. I told myself I wouldn't get my hopes up, but I feel good about it. Not ecstatic, not willing to pin my whole happiness upon the results, but good.

439. I voted in Maryland
I had an interesting experience.

Usually I am up to vote at 7:00am, but todaya I slept in on a hunch that poles would be very busy first thing. I was right.

When I arrived at 10:45am the parking lot was about one third full (typically it's got six to ten cars, in this case I'd say 40 to 50). There was a line of about 25 people ahead of me (typically there are maybe 3). Pole workers let me know that sleeping in was wise since the line ran outside and alongside the building this morning.

Election officials were telling everyone to turn off cell phones because they were interfering with the Diebold fraud devices, er, I mean the voting electronics.

As I was approaching the building a woman asked if I wanted the Republican ticket info and I replied "definitely not" to which a man asked if I wanted the Democratic ticket info to which I replied "already voting democrat" and somehow couldn't resist adding "I'm tired of the neo-nazis".

While in line I spoke with the people around me about why I prefer paper ballots. The gentleman behind me thought that it was a crock that the machines could be used for fraud until I explained step by step where the problems could occur at which point he decided he didn't trust them either.

The vote went smoothly as far as I could tell from the machine I used, but some other folks were encountering some issues.

I had two calls from the people working for the democratic candidate running for governor both times they wanted to know if I needed transportation to the polling place if so they had a local phone number for me to call. Very pleasant calling manner. Their slogan "together we can"

This was noticeable after the very negative campaign from the republican candidate.

Oh paper ballot very easy to use. I want to keep it.

ANY "R"

The ballots are counted by those damn scanners but I felt 100% better voting on paper, leaving a paper trail in the event the ballots need to be recounted or in the event there is a need to "audit" them.

One of the poll workers gave me one of those stickers that I spent all "election" day in 2004 giving out when I worked the poll that day. She really wanted me to put it on straight away. I didn't and I asked if she had a sticker that said, "my vote was counted as I intended it?"

That was the end of that.

459. I went at 10 this morning - about 50 people at my tiny precinct
including a much higher ratio of minority voters than I had ever seen there before. Granted I live in republican lala land, so not much chance of the status quo being over turned here, but still it was nice to see some diversity in my very white, conservative district.

About 5 PM this afternoon... There was a short line and all of the voting "stations" were full at my precinct (there are only six of them, though, as it's a small precinct. Seemed like moderately high turnout for a midterm election. My precinct goes Democratic in local elections and is slightly Republican on the state level; hopefully, a number of those typical Republicans might see the light at least for this year, though...

468. I voted early this morning, figuring it would be
too busy after work. I am glad I did because it was not busy at all early (around 6:30) so I was in and out quick. Outside the school there was some geezer with a pro Joe sign shouting at people "If you are voting for Joe he is at the bottom." Contrary to what some are saying at least in my area he was very easy to find...right at the very bottom all by himself. I hope Lamont can beat him! When I was on my way out there was a van with a sign "Democrats and REpublicans vote for Simmons" and something to the effect that he saved jobs at the sub base and Electric Boat. It was very early so I don't know what else went on there. I hear the voter turnout is very heavy here so hopefully it's a good sign for us and a bad one for the Thuglicans.

Voted at ~3:30 on my way home. There were 8 people ahead of me, and about as many in line behind. About a third of the names in the voter list were marked "absentee ballot".

Mr. Retrograde said he saw several people using provisional ballots for reasons ranging from forgetting the absentee ballot to moving just before the election. At least here people are motivated. I overheard some people on the bus talking about how good it felt to vote against Ahnold!

476. I was asked if I wanted PAPER or PLASTIC
I made a joke about whether this was the polling place or the supermarket (I'm sure I wasn't the only one making that crack, though perhaps the first early this morning).

PLASTIC is a punchcard ballot, and PAPER is a darken-the-oval optical scan ballot which was my choice.

The first step in the process today was for a nice old lady to ask me my last name, then confirm my first name when she read it to me. No ID required, but my signature was. I didn't see them compare it to any previous signature of mine, so I couldn't help but think it would be fairly easy for an imposter to come in and cast a vote under someone else's name. I don't know if that's much an occurence in DuPage County, Illinois (western suburb of Chicago, heavily Republican).

539. I should have mentioned:
1. The damn no-paper-trail machine made it a real trial to simply vote straight Dem, hitting the straight-Dem button;
2. There was heavy early voting here in Denton -- my wife was in line for hours on the last evening of early voting;
3. There was a good turnout at the heavy-Dem precinct where my wife and son worked the polls today;
4. Stopped in at the courthouse to ask a question and overheard a voting-problem:
A woman was not on the rolls here, said she'd moved some time ago from another county. She was told to try to vote in the other county, but that if she wasn't on their rolls, then she couldn't vote. She said she'd registered when she renewed her driver's license with her new address, was asked whether she had done that online. She said she had done it online and had hit the 'register to vote' button. She was told that one cannot register online, that since she hit that button, she "should have been" sent a voter-registration card to mail in. She said she had not received said card; was told that she was not registered in this county, in any case.

521. I Voted Lincoln Nebraska
I drove through Lincoln home from the job about 5pm. I didn't see much street corner campaigning. I did catch the new huge ford truck with the Ricketts sign covering the back of the truck. It was huge and ugly - the truck and the sign.

A lone Rickett's person stood still at 27/hi way 2 with a sign - no honking, nothing.
My polling place was packed. They had portable voting set up at tables and chairs. So about 12 people voting and another 15 waiting. I noticed my son was the 23 voter this morning - Ben is just 18.

Then I saw a young person in line and asked him hold old he was. He told me this was his first time voting. He was going to vote for Ben Nelson, because his father was Iraq and was not going to be able to come home for Grandma's funeral. Then he went on to tell me his mother called Ben Nelson and Ben Nelson said he was going to call the pentagon. His family had a phone call the next morning that dad was on his way home. I told the young gent it was a beautiful storey - and thanks for sharing. Oh the conviction in his eyes. An exciting night. How was yours?

Lets go BLUE!!

In my county in Arkansas, it was announced that we would have our choice of using the machine or, because they had malfunctioned so badly in the past, we could choose a paper ballot. At my polling place, we only had one choice -- a paper ballot! I was extremely pleased.

in manhattan beach, ca, where i've voted for the past 19 years...punch tickets, and there were 2 things that happened that were new: the guy who crossed me off the roll said, "Ah, it's great to have someone show up and vote who's on the roll," after which i asked if there were many people with missing names...he said, "Don't ask." The second thing was that my ballot was scanned as it went into the thingamajig - you know, the box!

hope my votes count...i voted straight Democratic with the exception of Dianne Feinstein. She's just been playing it too safe with regard to the war for my vote. on that race i went peace and freedom, which is what i would vote straight ticket if i didn't believe it was more important to get rid of the republicans.

592. I voted (on paper) then went to the grocery store & did it all electronically
Strange how that works: at Trader Joe's I can slide my credit card, watch the purchases totted up on the little screen where I slid it, get the receipt with everything on it -- and be assured that the credit card company, the bank, and the store will all work in synch to make sure it's correctly done. But the voting machine manufacturers can't manage it?

Seems to me that there's no such thing as "glitches' and "human error" when they foul up -- even the appearance of simple incompetence is intentional.

I went home and said this to my honey, who teaches Computer Info Systems and knows it already. Thanks to me, though, he now tells his students about it as well.

Hekate

596. Went and took children too
Very surprised surprised to see a line at the election location this evening. In past elections, I'd be chatting with the poll workers because I was one of a few voting. This time there was a good crowd. But voting went quickly and we were out in less than 10 minutes.

599. Proudly voted and worked for
Jim Webb in Virginia beach today. It may be red here, but in the end every vote counts.

603. On paper, but: bad format, bad reader, possibly satellite connected?
Good volunteers.
On paper.
My ballot misaligned during read, spat back, then accepted my ballot upon second attempt. Good.

But,

Overpriced paper -- cardboard, numbered, over-sized, perforated tear-off number -- ridiculous. 8.5x11 would be fine.
. Is numbered ballot traceable to me? Why number it? So only the current officials can stuff the ballot box?
. Ballot is not stamped as valid by poll workers meaning ballot box can be stuffed. There would be no difference between a stuffed ballot and an actual voter ballot. No difference between the vote I cast and one replaced by some nefarious other.
. ballot was so long the secrecy sheath was not long enough so the embarrassed poll worker tried not to look at my vote. A ridiculous situation.

Format was to darken a circle, takes 10-20 seconds of concentration. Used to draw a one to two second line.
. with 40 or more circles to darken, circles took five minutes of my time versus half a minute with lines.
. How do I know if I darkened the circle enough? I DON'T; I WON'T. Undercounts won't be flagged for me.
. How much time should I spend on each circle? I don't and won't know. A line is so much easier. A computer printed ballot would be so much easier.

Then the sheepish poll volunteer said the reader might communicate by satellite. Who knows what it is sending, when it is sending or what it is receiving and when. Scarily ridiculous.

Overall.

Very prone to mischief.

608. I voted
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 08:28 AM by ladyVet
Picked up my mom and my two oldest boys and went to our little rural polling place at the elementary school. Got there around 5:20 pm, had a line around the perimeter of the school gym, but the line was moving pretty fast. It took an hour until we got to the machines, but everybody seemed happy and looked glad to be out in the rain to vote.

There was steady traffic the entire time, and the poll workers said it had been a good turnout all day, no problems with the machines (we have touch screens). We watched carefully, but whatever we touched, was what came up on the confirm screens, so I feel good about my vote. We all voted Democrat except for the sheriff race (the challenger is a lackey of the former do-nothing, good ol' boy dem sheriff).

oops..... I'm in North Carolina
