Gardening Question relative to today's election
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 01:20 PM by BOSSHOG
Location: South Mississippi (Zone 9)

I have been deadheading our Mums and fixing to put the Begonias in the compost pile and am looking for some replacement plants. In celebration of our pending victory I thought about a red, white and blue color scheme in winter plants. Any suggestions? Nothing could possibly be more patriotic then a democratic victory tonight and By Golly I wanna celebrate that victory by getting dirty tomorrow. Join me in your neck of the woods by putting our nations colors in bloom.

2. Not sure about zones, Boss
What state are you in? How about pansies? They'll winter pretty well in the south (I'm in NC, and they hold up really well through the cold weather). Plus they come in a huge variety of colors.

5. Yeah, I'll probably do a little
perusing the Nurseries tomorrow for a nice patriotic color scheme in Pansies. snapdragons are nice but it seems they just sit there for months and don't get real pretty til April. We are in South Mississippi.

Jake Delhomme looks fantastic in a Saints Uniform. Boy did we hose things up getting rid of him. But we are finally back on the right track with Drew Brees.

9. Ooops! Sorry, missed that
I don't know why I missed that South Mississippi part before -- sorry. I like the idea of snap-dragons, but you're right. They don't get pretty until the spring. I like the Salvia idea that someone else suggested.

Yep, Delhomme is the guy -- better a cat than a saint, and we appreciate the trade, believe me. I like Brees too -- he's looking good this year.

3. Hey BOSSHOG, I'm up here in zone 5
so I'm not familiar with winter gardening. But I've put in red, white, and blue salvia in the past. It's very hardy, so I would think it would work.

7. Thanks very much
I'll put them on my shopping list. We have fairly mild winters with a couple days of freezing weather.

6. I live north of you (Nashville) and all of these are still in bloom,
so how about red and white striped petunias and blue pansies?

Or, red and white mums or solid color petunias and whatever blue/indigo flower you can find?

10. Sounds like a nice idea
but up here in North Country we are pretty much into evergreens right now and not long til they are white!

11. Hi BOSS! Pansies would be perfect!
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 02:06 PM by CottonBear
You could even arrange some in a bed in flag pattern! They look great in pots with something like an oranmental kale planted in the center. You could also plant a very dwarf evergreen shrub or miniature conifer in a larger pot and then put the pansies around it.
:patriot:
Happy gardening and good luck with the election in Mississippi!

:hi: CB

edit: Lenten Roses come in white and are evergreen perennials. They come in a red-pink too. That leaves a blue plant to be added to the mix. How about a blue-green dwarf conifer?

12. I'll just be a busy little gardener tomorrow
Pansies are one of those ironic plants. Supposedly that's not a nice thing to call a person but those lil suckers hang out in freezing weather and look so purty and hearty. Have a "pansy" do that. Think I'll head for the garden spot in Slidell and see what I can come up with tomorrow. I've been deadheading our Mums. I think we are gonna get another bloom from them soon.

I voted early this morning but things were busy. We have an anti-alcohol measure on the ballot and all the God Loving, human hating baptists will be out in force. Its the only exciting thing on our ballot. Restaurants want the county to allow alcohol sales, if not they won't build. Churches are opposed to it because all people who drink alcohol are sodomites who will get behind the wheel and kill all the children. So I figure what they want me (and the rest of us) to do is drive 75 miles round trip, get drunk, leave our tax money in another state and drive home; instead of driving maybe 9 miles round trip and leaving our tax money close to home. Work for me. Whenever we go out me or the Mrs do not drink. Gosh responsible non church goers, imagine.

I guess bringing up the Bulldogs would be a touchy subject huh? Go Hogs Go!

13. The Bulldog Nation is a state of severe and unrelenting depression.
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 02:05 PM by CottonBear
First Vandy beat us and then Kentucky. Auburn and GA Tech are next in line to whip our asses. :(
My boss is a Tech grad and I will not hear the end of it if Tech beats Georgia at Sanford Stadium on the weekend after Thanksgiving. I was so depressed about the Dawgs that I did not even listen to the last quarter of the last game. :(

Have fun in your garden! It is a dark and misty-rainy day here so there will be no gardening for me until things dry out a bit. The alcohol sales in restaurants issue has come up in the conservative (read white) suburban and rural counties around Athens. Of course, those church-going Republicans who profess to hate the idea of alcohol sales in restaurants flock to eat and drink in my fair city! Hypocrites, all of them!

Take care! CB

PS: Go Hogs! ;)

14. Arkansas does not have
a rivalry like GA-GA Tech. Back in the good old days of the SWC it was Texas. The world stopped in Fayetteville the week before the Texas-Arkansas Game. It was the only story in town. The SEC is trying to brew a rivalry between Arkansas and LSU (adjoining states, always playing the last game of the season, playing for the boot trophy) but the fire just ain't there. I know the passion of Georgia-Georgia Tech and its really a good thing.

Maybe you will be clearing up soon. We had rain and yucky weather this AM but its clear and cool right now. Very nice.
