Can a devout Muslim be an American patriot? Help me respond to this email.
If anyone wants to take a break from the election and help me repond to this email, I'd appreciate it. DUers tend to be better at thoughtful, articulate reponses to this kind of crap. I got this email from a longtime Republican who is slowly coming over to our side (they are voting for several Dems today). I am sure it originates from a braindead Bushbot, but the person who sent it to me is not a Bushbot. I'd like to respond for their sake. Here is the email...

Have you ever thought -- Can a devout Muslim be an American patriot and a loyal citizen? Is Muslim American really an oxymoron? Consider this:

Theologically, no. Because his allegiance is to Allah, the moon god of Arabia.

Religiously, no. Because no other religion is accepted by his Allah except Islam (Quran, 2:256)

Scripturally, no. Because his allegiance is to the five pillars of Islam and the Quran (Koran).

Geographically, no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns in prayer five times a day.

Socially, no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friend with Christians or Jews.

Politically, no. Because he must submit to the mullah (spiritual leaders), who teach annihilation of Israel and destruction of America, the great Satan.

Domestically, no, because he is instructed to marry four women and beat and scourge his wife when she disobeys him (Quran 4:34).

Intellectually, no, because he cannot accept the American Constitution since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes the Bible to be corrupt.

Philosophically, no, because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran do not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co - exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or Autocratic.

Spiritually, no, because when we declare "one nation under God," the Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in the Quran's 99 excellent names.

Therefore after much study and deliberation.... Perhaps we should be very suspicious of ALL MUSLIMS in this country. They obviously cannot be both "good" Muslims and good Americans. Call it What you wish...it's still the truth.

1. The Constitution is not based on biblical principles

I once posted "Can a Conservative Christian be an American patriot?" but it was pretty controversial, even on this site. Half of the DU'ers who saw it were pretty shocked that I had written it.

4. Considering Thomas Paine, THE father of America I ask:
Can a CHRISTIAN be a Patriot?

considering how TP and the other founding fathers who were largely diest attacked christianity to the point where even an atheist might be offended I have to wonder....

PS This question is bullshit. There is no litmus test to be a patriot. It's how you serve your country that defines the extent of your patriotism.

6. Well if you don't know how to shoot a virus to his I.P. address...
This person is a bigot. Bigots are not patriotic in this country which was founded on the principal of equality for all. They inherently do not like Democracy because they do not want other groups to have equality.

bigot
One entry found for bigot.
Main Entry: big·ot
Pronunciation: 'bi-g&t
Function: noun
Etymology: French, hypocrite, bigot
: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance
- big·ot·ed /-g&-t&d/ adjective
- big·ot·ed·ly adverb

"Socially, no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friend with Christians or Jews."

This email is an obvious attempt to stop people from being FRIENDS with Muslims. There can be no true friendship in a sea of bigotry.

7. wow. that is horrible and full of complete errors
I think the best answer is to provide evidence of the Founding Fathers saying explicitly that America is NOT a Christian nation. There are several good quotes from several of the "big" ones and you can easily find them on The Google's internets tubes.

Pretty much all of the other crap applies equally to fundamentalist Christians as it does to any fundamentalist. I have Muslim friends, and they have not shunned be because I am an infidel, nor do they seem to hate America - although some of them agree on hating the jackasses currently ruining..er... running it.

Seriously. This is ridiculous, bigoted, and nothing more than hate-propaganda.

8. This horsecrap is stale, recycled...
...versions of the scare-stuff that was circulated to try and keep John F. Kennedy (a CATHOLIC! eeeeeeeek!!) from being elected. "A Catholic's first loyalty is to the Pope, blah-blah-blah."

It's all horse puckey and it was written by someone who knows NOTHING about Islam or Muslim nations.

Ignorant bigotry at its most blatant.

Disgusting.

dismissively,
Bright

9. Oh and Geographically? Christians pray to the sky. Or does this
ass hat pray to a cardboard figure of george bush? And tell this freako that if he mistakenly prays while facing South East he/she is worshiping a false God according to his twisted version of Christianity.

"Geographically, no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns in prayer five times a day."

Or you could just ask him how it feels to be married to his sister.

11. In short...sure.
Kind of a silly issue/question...certainly steeped in bigotry.

You might see only a few Muslim American heroes/patriots with a military background, because most all of Islam tends to pacifism except of course the radicals. This is also true of Christians, by the way.

You are more apt to see Muslim American heroes like Ali or Jabbar...who do community work which is also a patriotic activity.

Lose your bigotry and the scales might lift from your eyes.

13. This man is a Muslim American patriot...
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 06:45 PM by KzooDem
http://www.kalcounty.com/Board/commissioners/district9.htm

He's a County Commissioner in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He's worked for several years for the City of Kalamazoo, served as a city commissioner for neighboring Portage, MI, and is currently a county commissioner. This man is a great public servant. I've worked with him and know him well. He's a good guy. He's a Republican, but one of the very few I respect.
I've heard him talk passionately about his experience of making Haj in Mecca, and I've also heard him talk passionately about his dedication to public service and democracy.
