They're trying to guage the degree of discontentment with Bush and how much his supporters have turned on him by voting for Democrats this time around. A very logical and instructive question.

They are trying to analyze who the voters are. A big portion are going to be Republicans who have seen the light. I think this is to guage the portion of the voter discontent.

They're trying to gauge the amount of anti-GOP sentiment that has built up from the 2004 elections up to now. Especially in a state like Virginia, this makes sense.
