House Speaker Sviggum says DFL takes control

GOP state House Speaker Steve Sviggum said Democrats have won control of the Minnesota House after eight years of Republican rule, the Associated Press reported late Tuesday.

Riding a wave of disenchantment with President Bush and other Republicans, especially at the national level, DFLers hoped to regain control. They had to pick up two Republican seats to reverse the GOP's current 68-66 majority.

The state Senate, in DFL hands since 1973, was also up for grabs, with the GOP minority needing to gain five seats to erase its 38-29 deficit.
