A Message to my fellow Democrats & Progressives |
|
America spoke out yesterday in our favor. Americans are ready for a change in direction, and they are ready to make intelligent and meaningful progress. This was a huge victory for us, but are jobs are not done! The middle class now has a representative force in Washington. It is at this very moment that we need to make sure that the people we elected keep their word and start making practical and progressive decisions. I am glad that our Democratic Party has a wide range of liberals and conservatives. The Democratic Party reflects the core of America right now. We gave these candidates our support because they promised us progress. We must now make sure we speak out and let them know that we expect substance , not rhetoric.
I know many of you will be eager to push for many social issues. I agree with most of you on these social issues. However, I still don't think the core of America is ready for that change (unfortunately). We must first make progress on issues that we know America wants (Iraq War, Education, Taxes, Peaceful International Diplomacy, Health-care, etc). If we approach this correctly, and show the American people that we are serious about making and implementing progressive ideas then we can gain the trust of the people once again. It is once we gain this trust and show what are philosophy on government is, that we can start to open minds. Let's go out and practice what we preach.
In the word of Barrack Obama: "Let's get busy"

I agree with the person who started this thread. We have to pick our battles. You can't start off with gay marriage. That one is going to take some time. Clearly the majority of Americans want a raise in the minimum wage. They also want us to provide oversight into how money is spent in Iraq. Then we need to work on solving the problem of companies moving jobs overseas and subsidies for large corporations.
For the presidency we need a candidate who is more moderate. We need to redefine the "war on terror". What that should mean is us getting out of Iraq and refocusing on getting Osama bin Laden. It's been 5 years since 9/11 and we still have not caught bin Laden. This is outrageous. Besides, the taliban is making farmers in Afghanistan grow poppy so they can make heroin out of it. That is just plain wrong. We should be doing something about that.
We need a presidential candidate like Bill Richardson, Wesley Clark, Al Gore or John Edwards. No more nominating a northeast liberal to be our candidate. They won't win the national election! If we are going to win the White House we have to have someone who can relate to all of the people.
