1. Madame Speaker- Elect

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), soon to be Speaker of the House in the aftermath of the midterm elections, gets a hug from a student as she arrives on Capitol Hill the day after Democrats took control of the House for the first time in 12 years, in Washington November 8, 2006. 68. Here comes the Bogey-woman!!
The GOP has tried their level best and even their crooked best to convince everyone that the country will go to hell in a handbasket if Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker of the House. Very interesting talk for people who have been wrong about everything and dishonest about everything who have themselves put us in the dismal position we're in.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Nancy Pelosi step further out into the limelight with the power to rein in Dubya & Co. They're going to find out how much they've underestimated her.

49. Sorry, you're wrong on that....
Minnesota had a female Senator in the late 1970's. Muriel Humphrey was selected to fill out the term of her husband Hubert when he died of cancer back in 1977. She did not seek election to his term, but she WAS a US Senator.

Amy Klobuchar is Minnesota's first ELECTED female senator. :toast:

146. Not necessarily a permanent handicap (off topic)
There's a guitar player here in Austin who lost a couple of fingers on his left hand, so he taught himself to play left-handed (I'm pretty sure he re-strung, as opposed to playing upside down, as another left-hander I know). The kick is, he's really a good "picker", so to speak, hee hee, flat-picker, that is.

I do however hate to see people who have lost parts of themselves, it makes life extremely inconvenient. Ever have your hand bandaged for a week? Challenging.

196. Yeah, I've been amazed at all the talking heads praising Santorum's speech...
... as though he hadn't demonstrated 12 years of extreme intolerance, and now we're supposed to listen to a pithy speech put together for him and think he's anything but a fanatic.

As for the kids, he had no concern for how being up there would affect them. For him, as with most Republicans, it's all about image.

Just shameful. (And predictably pandering of the press.)

162. I think it's more of a referendum of the disasterous leadership of the state GOP
They were in total control between 1998 and 2004 (except for a short period where we had a one vote lead in the Senate), and Colorado didn't really go anywhere. Then we elected a Dem. legislature (both houses) in 2004, and lo and behold the Democrats have actually done good things for Colorado, which I won't get into here but which succeeded in winning the faith of moderates and independents who before were hesitant to vote Dem. There was also a legislative special session called by our Repub. Governor Owens this summer to stir up anti-immigration sentiment that ended up becoming the Republican waterloo because the Dems made the Republicans look like the idiots they are.

It also helped that the Rebublican candidate for Gov. ran a complete train wreck of a campaign. Nobody took him seriously after late spring.

20. Peeps, net/grassroots and Dean's plan carried the day. Dean's Democracy
bonds would be a good way to get money to his plan. I understand from Hartmann that DLC Rahm Emmanuel is stepping into the camera at every opportunity.

It was netroots/grassroots, independents, and fed up GOPers that stopped the rabid RW direction.

The Dem leadership won despite themselves. I'm glad Pelosi is speaker. She has NO right to take impeachment off the table. She is no more QUEEN than Chimpy McCokespoon is KING.

Bush's Republicans, force a change of direction in Iraq and shape the legacy of a president with two years left in office.

73. Schweitzer softened him up in 2000 and Tester killed him off so pic's apropo
Schweitzer found quite a few points of vulnerability of Burns in 2000 like his general cluelessness and servitude to big special interests, left those impressions about him that were confirmed since then with the Abramoff affair and other displays of cluelessness which Tester could exploit and did and then apply the coup de grace.

That's how its done people.

236. I took this with my camera phone at the Rendell Victory party in Philly

The big burly guy with white hair is Bob Brady of PA-02, probably the best friend organized labor could ever have for a representative. To the right of him is Ed Rendell giving his victory speech. I think to the right of him is Catherine Baker Knoll, Lt Governor

Hey, it was a camera phone
