RICHMOND, Nov. 8 -- Virginia Democratic Senate candidate James Webb claimed the title of "Senator-elect" today even as Republican incumbent Sen. George Allen declined to concede a race he was losing by 7,146 votes.

Webb advisers said he will announce members of his transition team later this afternoon. Webb leads Allen by less than three tenths of a percent out of 2.3 million votes that were cast Tuesday.

"There's never been a Senate election where a candidate with the margin of this size, or for that matter even smaller . . . has not emerged as the next Senator," said former Gov. Mark R. Warner (D), who is advising Webb.

At a Richmond news conference, Allen adviser Ed Gillespie said the senator will wait for the results of a statewide process called a canvass, in which the preliminary tallies from Tuesday night are confirmed during the next several days. Gillespie said the GOP believes that process could change the vote tally in Allen's favor.

6. Extremely smart tactic.
Not only is he the the REAL winner, but he will gain the "winner" glow in the eyes of the media and Allen will just keep looking more and more like a spoiler whiny racist loser!

7. Allen urged to concede

Times-Dispatch Staff Writers

WASHINGTON - A prominent national Democrat today called on President Bush to urge Sen. George Allen to concede to Democrat Jim Webb in Virginia, in the interest of bipartisanship.

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, suggested at a news conference that Allen follow the actions of some other Senate candidates in close races in the past and concede, without seeking a recount.

But a senior advisor to Allen’s campaign said Allen would wait until after the vote is official later this month to decide whether to seek a recount.

Ed Gillespie said Jim Webb was leading Allen by about 7,000 votes this morning, or about .3 percent of the total votes cast. He said that could change during the official canvas that is starting today in localities around the state. He said it is likely some vote totals will change as mistakes in tabulating totals are discovered ...

8. Good for him!
Dem leadership needs to back him up by claiming a Senate victory.

Make Allen challenge the inevitable Senator Webb.

11. This is EXACTLY what he should have done. Way to be the man
by siezing the initiative last night and continuing the P.R. blitz today while the lawyers and party operatives oversee the counting and potential recounting.

We got this thing sewn up! Let's call Allen the Sore Loser he is. Stupid rat bastard macaca.
