The latest:
The bitterly fought 1st Congressional District race between incumbent Republican Heather Wilson and Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid stretched into Wednesday — still too close to call.
It remained neck-and-neck as the clock ticked past midnight, daybreak and noon. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Wilson was ahead by the slimmest of margins with 50.26 percent of the vote compared with 49.74 for Madrid — a difference of 1,048 votes.
More results were expected Wednesday as Bernalillo County election workers tabulated more than 4,500 absentee ballots, 642 early votes that were being hand-tallied because tabulating machines kicked them out and 261 Election Day votes that also were kicked out, said Bernalillo County Clerk Mary Herrera.
In addition, Bernalillo County has more than 3,700 provisional and in-lieu of ballots that by law cannot be counted until the canvass. Herrera said she expected the figures Friday. Four other precincts — three in Sandoval County and one in Santa Fe County — also weren't going to be available until election officials returned to work Wednesday morning.
