2006 Election "Still Undecided" races, Local News wrap-up thread! Post Local News!
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 07:44 PM by Up2Late
...and any other news that you have DIRECT Knowledge of, NO RUMORS or Cable "News" chatter from MSNBC, FOX, or CNN on-Air chatter please. What I really want to know is, what is the Local News saying about these races, what happens next? When will the counts and results be final?

Data from CNN.com Election 2006 and SoS websites are O.K. too.

Senate
<http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/senate/>

House
<http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/house/>

Governor
<http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/governor/>

Here are the races I'm looking for local News about:

MINNESOTA Governors Race: Do they have to go to a Run-off now? <http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/MN/G/00/index.html>

House Races:

Connecticut 02

Georgia 12

Louisiana 02

New Mexico 01

North Carolina 08

Ohio 02

Ohio 15

Washington 08

Wyoming 01

And

Texas 23 <http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/TX/H/23/index.html>

And of course in the Senate

Virginia

<http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/VA/S/01/index.html>

<http://us.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/VA/S/01/county.002.html>

I guess I'll start, because I just heard about the Virginia Senate Race on NPR:

<http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6457666>

The missing votes from Isle of Wight County are in a computer that Locked up (they can't get it open), but they claim the 383 ballots are safe inside and will be opened and counted tomorrow around 3:00pm at the county office, when the Sequoya Computer tech gets there.

And the two other precincts don't actually exist, one is a computer anomaly and the other is in the middle of the James River.

Georgia 12 is another story. The Local News said they had a (Diebold AccuVote TS) Computer Malfunction and claim they are going to do a "Re-count," something that is absolutely imposable to actually do with the Diebold AccuVote TS, especially a malfunctioning one.

Btw, this is one of the Democratic House seats KKKarl said he though they could pick up, the other one, Georgia 08 has finally been called for the Democrat incumbent.

1. Might pick up another one in NC 08
http://www.wsoctv.com/news/10274733/detail.html

It was never considered a "race to watch", but I guess it should have been. Kissell is a great candidate.

2. I just added that one to the list, it's on the map but not in the...
...CNN list that I was working from, I guess they missed it too.

3. 40 votes to a recount in Wyoming
I don't know why we aren't paying more attention to this race.

"But the 970 vote spread between her and Trauner would not trigger an automatic recount by the state. The vote spread would have to be no more than 931 for a recount to take place."

5. I don't know
I don't get the lack of attention though. Dean put some money in this race. Trauner ran a left of center race. To come this close in Wyoming is HUGE. He isn't conceding. Somebody should be up there helping him. They had a software tabulation in one of the counties there too.

6. I'm not sure either, as you can see by my list, there are a bunch of...
...house races we could win if we put a little more effort into them. Maybe now that Webb has won, the people who are still charged up will start looking for another race to work on.

8. 18,000 votes in U.S. House race may be lost (Miami Herald)

SARASOTA

18,000 votes in U.S. House race may be lost

Thousands of votes were either not counted or not cast in Sarasota's nationally watched congressional race.
BY MARC CAPUTO
mcaputo@MiamiHerald.com

SARASOTA - The latest Florida election whodunit, replete with a razor-thin vote margin and a looming recount, played out here Wednesday as state and county officials were at a loss to explain why 18,382 votes weren't cast or recorded in the nationally watched congressional race to replace Katherine Harris.

Already, the specter of the botched 2000 elections has gripped the area, owing to the mere mention of Harris, the former Florida secretary of state, as well as partisan battle cries, with Republican Vernon Buchanan saying it's time to move on after he claimed a 368-vote victory near 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Democrat Christine Jennings said voters were ''victimized'' because the ''staggering number'' of so-called ''undervotes'' were disproportionately higher here compared with the other four counties in House District 13 and other races. More votes were recorded for the Hospital Board Southern District.

Hanging in the balance: voter faith in the ATM-style touch-screen voting machines -- the same type used in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. By chance, Sarasota voters were the first in Florida to amend their county's charter Tuesday to call for a paper-trail ballot system....

10. Cincinnati Enquirer: Wulsin not ready to concede (Ohio 02)
(The is the seat the Republican Jean Schmidt is currently occupying)

Wulsin not ready to concede

2nd District candidates wait for provisional ballot count
BY DAN HORN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Victoria Wulsin says she's down but not out of the race in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District. The Democrat refused to concede defeat to incumbent Jean Schmidt on Wednesday, saying she would wait until thousands of provisional ballots were counted before declaring the tight race over.

"There should be no rush to name a victor," said Wulsin spokesman Ady Barkan. "It's more important to name the right victor."

Schmidt's backers say that happened Tuesday night, when their candidate tallied 2,323 more votes than Wulsin, giving Schmidt 50.51 percent of the total. Schmidt declared victory late Tuesday. "She should make it easier on herself and concede," said Matt Perin, a spokesman for Schmidt. "We won. It's over."

Both sides now are bracing for a weeks-long process that could attract national attention as Democrats try to bolster their lead in the House.

And Republicans will keep on fighting.

14. AP: Burns, Collins wait for final vote counts, possible recounts (which are impossible in GA)

(Funny, this is the ONLY on-line Newspaper that I was able to find that is carrying the AP story! I can't even find it at the AP Website! And check out the link below to CNN.com, look where they stopped the count!)

Burns, Collins wait for final vote counts, possible recounts

RUSS BYNUM
Associated Press

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Republican challengers to two Democratic congressmen dug in their heels two days after the midterm elections, unwilling to concede in cliffhanger races while some votes remained uncounted. Rep. Jim Marshall won a third term by a slight margin and freshman Rep. John Barrow has also claimed victory. But their opponents - former GOP congressmen Mac Collins and Max Burns - insist provisional and military absentee ballots could still swing the elections in their favor.

"No one wants this race decided more than I do," Burns told reporters Thursday, when unofficial returns showed him trailing Barrow by a mere 889 votes. "But it's still too close to call, too close to concede."

Burns, still hoping for a comeback after losing his 12th District seat to Barrow in 2004, said he planned to wait until Georgia's secretary of state certifies the election results next week, likely on Wednesday.

In middle Georgia's 8th District, Collins also refused to give up despite trailing Marshall by almost 1,700 votes. Spokesman Bill Hagan said Collins may also wait until next week before deciding whether to concede.
