HR 810 - the Stem Cell bill that Bush veteod, we can override the veto now
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 10:59 AM by LynneSin
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00206

The vote in the Senate was 63-37.

Now, first let's assume that everyone who is returning to congress sticks with their original vote. There will be eight new senators coming to DC.

Independant-Independant
Jeffords supported the bill and Sanders, the replacement, supported it in the house (no net change)

Republican-Republican
Frist did not support the bill and I'm assuming that Corker won't either (no net change)

Republican-Democrat
Allen did not support the bill but Webb will support it (+1)
Burns did not support the bill but Tester will support it (+1)
Santorum did not support the bill and I don't think Casey will support it either (no net change)
DeWine did not support the bill but Brown supported it in the House (+1)
Talent did not support the bill but McCaskill win (+1)
Chafee did support the bill and Whitehouse will also support it (no net change)

Democrat-Democrat
Sarbanes supported the bill and Cardin will also support it (no net change)
Dayton supported the bill and Klobacher will also support it (no net change)

So we replaced four people who voted against the stem cell with four people who will support it which will put us now at 67-33 AND enough to override Bush's veto!!!!

4. That will definately happen
Mike Castle, my republican representative but extremely moderate, has this as one of this pet projects that he really supports (BTW, Michael J. Fox said he supported Castle in Delaware, which shows that Fox did support a republican).

Thing is, we have the votes now and Bush can't override this. And knowing that Fox probably helped us deliver Missouri, the least we can do is get this bill passed

9. You know I love you Lynne, but how can anyone be "extremely moderate?"

I know what you mean, but that's the best laugh I've had this morning!

5. Senate looks good, the House?
Wouldn't we need a two-thirds over-ride in the House also???

11. There are 10 new Senators.
Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Bob Corker (R-TN), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Jim Webb (D-VA), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Bob Casey, Jr. (D-PA), Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Jon Tester (D-MT).

Casey and Corker are "pro-life" abd can be expected to vote against embryonic stem cell research.

12. Very helpful! Thanks, LynneSin, and thank you, Michael J. Fox.
I can't believe how much better the world has become since Tuesday. There is so much reason for optimism now.

15. I don't see how we can get 2/3 in the House, though.
It passed 238 to 194.

Even if we gain 35 votes, which is an optimistic estimate:
273/425= 63%.

It takes 67% to override a veto.

Maybe they should try just in case a huge number of Republicans change their positions.

16. The override vote in the House was 235-193. We'd need fifty votes
Not sure whether we can find them.
