Can we start a "drive" to repeal the MCA? |
|
Now that we control both houses should we "our mandate" and power and get rid of the Military Commissions Act?
This law scares the crap out of me...too dangerous...for a Democracy...
Any suggestions?
Can we here at DU start a drive or petition to get our Democratic leaders to repeal it?

1. First we need a good PR effort |
|
That putrid attack on the Constitution unfortunately enjoys public support. The GOP successfully portrayed it as "protecting us from terrorists". The people need to understand that it actually threatens their rights and freedoms and expands the power of the President to a frightening level. I've found that by pointing out to conservatives that President Hillary Clinton would have the same power under the law they start to get it.

3. True, we do need some good PR to help push this. |
|
And if there's a petition or something, I'll be HAPPY to sign it.
BTW - my husband wrote to Dianne Feinstein last night, A) congratulating her on reelection and claiming a small part in it for having supported and voted for her; and B) asking that her first priority is restoring habeas corpus to our Constitution - which is NOT "just a goddamned piece of paper," thankyouverymuch.
It was a good letter. Well crafted and courteously expressed. I'd humbly suggest that, if you're going to be doing ANY congressional contacting AT ALL, that you make sure you mention this. The staffers keeping tallies on this stuff need to start seeing substantial counts of constituent feedback pushing this specifically.
Remember:
If they think you don't care, THEY WON'T, EITHER!!!

She fucking supported the thing.
Every day she comes off as more and more right wing.

7. It'll be easier to suspend enforcing it in 2008 with a Presidential order. |
|
I believe the Dems will stay away from ANYTHING that will make it possible for them to be blamed for losing Iraq and Afganistan.
That's in large part the reason the Dems would like the Baker-Hamilton commission to come up with an action recommendation.
