1. I doubt that's "official" ... it's probably just a political rule
In other words ... if you can't even win the majority of votes in your own state, don't even bother running nationally.

3. I'd guess he meant it philosophically
not in a legal context.

6. I don't see how that can be so
More then likely he or she meant that it was impractical and foolish to run for POTUS if you lose your state's Senate race.

Al Gore obviously is far more liberal then his home state is going for in terms of whom they elect for the Senate, and that should never stop him from running again should he decide to do so.

7. BattyDem is right. It's not a legal thing but a politically logical thing.
As was said, if you can't even win your own State's support, you don't stand a chance nationally!

I think that does make sense too.

8. rule of thumb
or conventional wisdom.

If you aren't popular enough to get a majority of your home state to vote for you, it would be very difficult to get a majority of Americans to vote for you.

9. It could be a "truth", more than a rule.
To run for President in 2008, I am told a candidate will have to raise between 70 and 100 million dollars. Who the hell is going to contribute that kind of $$$ to someone who can't even win a Senate race in his own state? It could just be the day and age we are in right now.

10. Well I guess that means Rick Santorum could run for president....
...I mean, he lost in Pennsylvania, not his home state of Virginia
