Well that didn't last long - Bolton nomination dead, Chafee will vote "NO"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steve-clemons/lincoln-chafee-opposing-j_b_33743.html

Word has just reached me from a well-placed source that the White House has continued to push John Bolton's confirmation prospects as US Ambassador to the United Nations despite the election outcome.

Another highly placed source has informed me that in just a few minutes Senator Lincoln Chafee is calling a press conference to state categorically that he will not support John Bolton's confirmation in the upcoming lame duck session.

The Bolton confirmation will be officially dead in a few minutes.

11. no, he cannot.
bolton's term expires when the 110th congress begins. Bolton cannot be appointed again until that congress recesses.

19. He can get another recess appointment, he just won't be paid
But I have a feeling that the BFEE would find a way to pay him anyway, on the side.

6. The guy would have a job if he switched parties
Because really, there isn't a whole lot of negative things you can say about Chafee other than he was associated with a party filled with hate.

23. That's because Alito was qualified for the job
He is, to be sure, a vicious ideologue, but he is, unfortunately, a qualified vicious ideologue.

28. Well, that depends on your definition of "qualified" & "ideologue" isn't in mine.
But, I'm not going to re-hash the whole Alito debacle.

I'm in my happy place today.

9. I keep having this idea that Rove is going to be gone soon.
I mean really what does he have to do now? He can't keep the base in line, there is not another election to win for Georgie and I can't imagine another Repub bringing him on now that his method has been so discredited. I would start this as a topic but I don't know how to do that.

I think you also have enough of a post count by now.

Why not try it? It'd be interesting to see what other people here think about that.

38. MAybe he felt he would be defrauding those who voted for a Republican, and also the
RNC, who supported his election. In other words, he is probably just much more honorable than Lieberman.

My guess is that he will become a Dem now and run for another elective office soon--and win.

...he was one of the genuinely patriotic Repukes who would vote against Bush on occasion. Glad the Dems now have the seat, but he seems to have had some principles, at least.

24. This is truly sad to read. Although I'm glad about Bolton
it really is a shame to see Chafee leave. I sent him an e-mail after he lost telling him that although I wanted Whitehouse to win, I was really impressed with how brave he was and that I wished he had switched parties. Farewell, Senator Chafee, you will be missed :patriot:

This liberal yella dawg would have welcomed him into the party with open arms.

May he continue to stand strong for America in the short time he has remaining.

30. Another reason to respect defeated Chafee.
One lesson we can take from this. You have to fight to keep your own party from turning into a monster. A good man like Chafee belonging to a bad party -- well, you vote him out of office, without apology. In this election it was R or D.

I'll be interested to read a good analysis of how the religious right and the neocons took over the Republican Party.

35. Now reported on AP, great Chafee quote...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061109/ap_on_go_co/bolton_un_ambassador

"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," Chafee said. "And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."

Sounds like a quality guy.

A party I think many of us would have also supported. He should have went independant at least but I hope this isn't the last we hear from Lincoln Chafee!
