For Santorum, what comes next?
http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/15965265.htm

It's never a good thing for an incumbent senator to spend $27 million running for reelection and lose by 18 percentage points.

But for Rick Santorum, getting steamrolled on Tuesday by Democrat Bob Casey Jr. may prove to be liberating in a strange sort of way.

"I think Rick can write his own ticket," said his Senate colleague and fellow Republican Arlen Specter.

Among the available options: Becoming a spokesman for national conservative causes, taking a role in the Bush administration, positioning himself to run for statewide office in Pennsylvania in 2010, and maybe even mounting a candidacy for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

<snip>

And his associates note that with six children and little family money, he does need to earn a substantial income. His wife, Karen, has been a nurse and has practiced law, but now is a stay-at-home mom.

5. He'll be hired
as a lobbyist or adviser to corporations or by some conservative think tank so fast it will make your head spin. People like him don't suffer the pangs of unemployment like some guy who got laid off from the auto assembly line.

6. He can downsize his lifestyle and move into that smaller home
in Penn Hills for starters. Then, as my Mom says, "He can go wait in the unemployment line."

I doubt he will get much notice as a candidate for the Presidency in 2008. He can't count on Pennsylvania to vote for him then. Probably he will wind up starting his own church.
