Is this true? Pelosi appointing Hastings on intel committee?
Someone on a car forum I frequent posted this. I haven't heard anything about this.

"Yes stupid, because if Pelosi did this, that is exactly what she would be. Borderline retarded.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aL6hiJ_1E1IY&refer=us

Cliff Notes: Pelosi condemns the Republicans for being corrupt, then nominates Alcee Hastings for Head of House Intelligence Commitee. Hastings, had previously been impeached for charges of bribery and obstruction of justice.

His case http://nalert.blogspot.com/2006/11/will-democrats-have-impeached-judge.html"

Car Forum? Yeah that's what I said asshole. A car forum. I am a Democrat and I like cars. A lot of the guys over there are conservatives and we clash all the time. But whats right is right. I sure as hell hope Pelosi doesn't open us Dems up to charges of corruption coddlers. I'm sure this guy made up for his failures, but it's a bad PR move right now.

4. No need for concern. She will not appoint Hastings (and maybe not Harman either)
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 06:59 PM by troublemaker
She's made it plain that she is not bound by seniority in that appointment. I heard chatter about an Hispanic member on Intel getting the chair. (Ruiz? Rayes? I don't know the spelling)

The RW articles referenced in the OP are purely speculative and one is pre-election propoganda (Nov. 2)

5. She's got the CBC on her back to appoint one of theirs, so I hear
Plus Harman left to run for Governor in 98, lost, and then came back in 2000. Shortly thereafter Gephardt made her top Dem on Intelligence, which has not sat well with the rest of the House Dems

numerous times since then by overwhelming numbers. He has an impeccable record in the House, has been an outstanding member of Congress and is the senior Democratic member of the Committee, behind Harmon.

He's also brilliant, understands House rules and procedures like nobody's business and, as one of the most eloquent Members of Congress, can explain extremely complicated issues in ways that everyone can understand.

He deserves the Chairmanship.

10. Actually he was impeached by both the Dem House and the Dem Senate
He was acquitted by a jury, but impeached by the house and senate. OVERWHELMINGLY!

"The House in 1988 voted 413-3 to impeach Hastings and the Senate voted 69-26 to convict and remove him from office. Pelosi and her current second-in-command, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland, both voted to impeach.

Representative John Conyers of Michigan, who may become Judiciary Committee chairman if Democrats win the House, led the impeachment effort. Conyers, who is black, said Hastings's status as the first black federal judge in Florida didn't excuse his behavior.

``Judge Hastings has been the architect of his own undoing,'' Conyers said before the impeachment vote. ``Judge Hastings has committed high crimes and misdemeanors and should be impeached.''

I don't know all that much about this, and I just don't want to see us opening ourselves up to attacks from the right. Something like this will not go over well in th epublics perception afte they just voted out Reps over in large part corruption.

14. Uh huh. What move has she made to give you evidence of this
appointment?

This is remarkably like weekend hysteria on my soap opera list. And it's midweek!

Like a bunch of attacking freeptards. I am asking for help in putting this to rest, and I get this shit. I figured there might be more collective info on this, I only scanned the article at first. I read the whole thing now, and have responded already on the forum. The guy was asserting that Pelosi was going to appoint Hastings. And I immediately went here for more info. Why don't you all lighten up huh?

22. And he's now a member in good standing of the House
has been elected and re-elected several times by voters who are fully aware of his impeachment but obviously believe he's a damned good legislator and deserving of a seat in Congress and he's been an outstanding member of the Committee.

He's played by the rules in the House and deserves the Chairmanship.

Don't fall into trap the Republicans are setting. They are wary of Hastings, not because he was once impeached but because he's effective as hell. THEY don't want him to be Chairman of this committee since they know he'll eat their lunch everyday.

I hope that Pelosi doesn't run scared on him out of fear that the Republicans will say bad things about him. They say bad things about EVERYBODY, including her. She needs to put the most effective chairs in charge of the committees, and Hastings is the best choice for Intel. He's top-notch.

9. Why don't the Dems NOT telegraph punches for once?
The RNC are huddled in their meeting rooms right now, planning their next tactics, and names are already floating around about possible appointees? Like the Repubs need the ammunition handed to them right now.

Right now I'd take any rumors about that with a grain of salt. If I were Rove, these are exactly the type of rumors I'd want riling up the Dem base, and asap.

I was wondering if you guys knew more than me about this. Apparently the article is only speculating. That calms my nerves. But I sure as hell hope Pelosi has enough PR sense to avoid that trap.
