PRESIDENT George W. Bush, desperate to save his legacy, is now ready to throw even his closest allies in front of a train.

He's dumping his mates. Mr Bush stood by defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld for years despite the criticism. Good on him, the Republican narrative went, the conviction politician; waging the war on terror; just the kind of tough leader you could sell to the electorate in the aftermath of 9/11.

Now he's just a flip-flopper.

In April, Rumsfeld, under intense pressure to step down, was doing "a fine job".

"I hear the voices and I read the front page and I know the speculation," Bush said angrily at the White House.

"But I'm the decider and I decide what's best. And what's best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the Secretary of Defence."

And last week -- Rumsfeld was doing a "fantastic job". Bush confirmed he wanted him to stay until the end of his term.
