Paper: No 'I voted' stickers for Coulter, Foley
Before Tuesday's midterm elections, Republican officials boasted that their "highly sophisticated get-out-the-vote operation" in the final hours would keep Congress in its control. But at least two "notorious" and high profile party members didn't do enough to aid the cause, a Florida newspaper reveals.

"Mark Foley, the former U.S. congressman in rehab for alcohol and sex-related problems, didn't send an absentee ballot request to the St. Lucie County elections office," Lambiet writes. "Conservative pundit Ann Coulter, accused of voting in the wrong precinct earlier this year, didn't cast her ballot, contributing further to the demise of the GOP in Congress."

"No 'I Voted' stickers for them," Jose Lambiet writes for the Palm Beach Post.

The Associated Press recently reported that Coulter's case will soon be turned over to prosecutors because of her refusal to cooperate with Florida election officials.

4. Is anyone having a problem with the fact that a newspaper
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 12:29 PM by higher class
would report on who didn't vote?

The scandal of not voting may delight those of us who don't respect Coulter or Foley's hypocrisy and silence for political purposes and participation in a cover-up. But, our votes are supposed to be private. How many people were involved in 'tattling' on them?

This is not reporting in a Democracy.

Set aside your delight while you state whether you are concerned about this so-called 'news' item.

This could have also been done to a Dem politician or a plain citizen.

8. When I voted in the past few elections ...
both primary and general, before I was given a ballot, I was asked for my name and address. They located it and drew an X in the box next to it. After turning in my ballot (straight 'D' by the way), again I was asked for my name and addressand they an X in the box next to it.

In my case, you can check the voter books and see I voted.

12. Public figures who are political active are treated differently
Remember when it came out that Ben Affleck didn't vote? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/affleck_doc.html The rightwing and others called him a hypocrite for rallying voters but not voting himself.

Remember when it came out that neither Puffy Comes and Russell Simmons voted after their GOTV efforts? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/rapthevote1.html

fwiw, walking lists give a lot of information. From walking lists supplied by my local Dem party I know who voted in the past few election cycles, I know if they have requested an Advanced Ballot, I know their phone numbers and I know how old they are. It is all part of the public record. Would I advertise it? It would depend.

For instance, if I knew that a particular person was bragging about always voting and chastising others for their lack of political participation but I knew, because of a walking list, that they were lying, would I say something? Probably not. I would, however, be less trustful of that person's veracity in the future.

On the other hand, if a political figure was doing the same thing and doing it publicly, I would probably come forth and publicize their hypocrisy. Before doing such a thing though, I would check with the offical voting records (like the signing books for that person's precinct) to determine if the information I had was wrong.

9. Coulter doesn't believe women should have the vote anyway.
And Coulter at least maintains that s/he is a woman.

13. After 9/11
my husband and I entertained the thought of proposing a city ordinance limiting flag sales only to people who voted. In other words, if you didn't bother to vote in 2000 then you probably have no idea about who Bush is and what he is capable of so, you don't deserve to wave the flag in our faces, act holier-than-thou and blindly follow him.

We realized it wouldn't fly (no pun intended) but it was nice to think about.
