2. Schweitzer is a Jekyll and Hyde character....
he recently was on record saying he could support a Mitt Romney candidacy? :wtf:

8. He said he'd think about it
I'll believe that Schweitzer would actually support Mitt when I see it. IMO, he was at an even with the guy and just trying to be nice.

9. Really? That's bizzare.
I hadn't heard that.

I'd be interested in finding out more about that statement.

12. Who cares? The guy is a pretty progressive, very popular Governor of a state
that voted for Bush by HUGE margins. All of our candidates are going to say and do stupid things from time to time.

16. True, but you don't necessarily want them as your Presidential
candidate, witness Felix Macacawitz. I like Schweitzer a lot, but I'm still scratching my head over that statement.

18. I don't get it either but
I still see Schweitzer as the kind of Democrat can sell the progressive agenda to progressives, and well as people who don't consider themselves progressive. I hope he gets in the 08 mix.

3. I like them, too, but neither one could win a national race.
And - I'm for a general - not a governor.

4. Senators almost never win...
They have their votes taken out of context and are used against them over and over. Take the votes that made Kerry look "weak on terror" or "not supporting the troops" for example. It's not fair, of course, but it happens. The shorter their record, the better.

5. Electing Senators seem something we are not able to do.
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 08:03 PM by Proud MD Liberal
Good question. Only two incumbent senators have ever been elected president: Republican Warren Harding in 1920 and Democrat John Kennedy in 1960. Since then, four senators did win presidential nominations, but not win the White House: Barry Goldwater in 1964, George McGovern in 1972, Bob Dole in 1996 and John Kerry in 2004.

edited for clarity

14. Only two of those lost partly because of their voting records
Barry Goldwater was batshit insane (at least for the time) and George McGovern was a political amateur who picked a running mate with mental health issues.

Bob Dole had problems with his voting record because he had been in the Senate for such a long time. Clinton and Gore could attack him on Medicare because Bob Dole had actually been in the Senate when Medicare was passed and he voted against it. Kerry had some problems but ultimately the only two votes that hurt him were the IWR and the 87 billion.

6. Who's the Governor of Utah?
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 08:08 PM by waiting for hope
I saw him on Countdown a few months ago, they were talking about the protest they had in Salt Lake. He was extremely likable.

On Edit: It was Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson.....

10. You think the media will go easy on them?
You do know that the GOP still controls and owns broadcast media regardless of who the candidate is?
