1. They'll hammer hard at Landrieu....
she barely won re-election in 2002, plus the demographics in Louisiana have changed. The thugs probably have somebody lined up already (most likely Jindal) to try to take her out. We need to be prepared for this one.

If that's the case she's screwed.

5. Dole
I doubt she will seek reelection. Even our local right-wing radio station here can't stand her and I don't imagine the GOP leaadership is impressed with her.

If our Democratic Governor Mike Easley wants the seat in 08 he could likely get it.

He is more widely liked and respected than Felix Jr., so if he runs again, he'll be hard to beat.

51. hehe. Ricky's problem is that people actually know him in his
home state, and that means he has no chance of winning.

You're probably right about Kaine, but we'll have to see if he succeeds as governor first. An already Dem Senate may entice Mark Warner to run, but I doubt it. I'm sure some other good Dems will emerge.

75. he declined to run against Allen when people
were urging him to do so (and he would have won easily). He said something along the lines that he was an executive type of person and didn't think he would have the patience to do what is necessary in the Senate. But IMHO it's possible that he was also reacting to the knock your head against a brick wall position he would be in while the Dems were in the minority.

37. OH, MO, MT - me
Virginia was a surprise though. I don't believe the country is all that conservative, otherwise Republicans wouldn't have to learn to speak televangelist to peddle their 'moral values'. The reason I don't see any more than 4 is because of who those candidates are as much as where they are. I knew Burns was an idiot, Talent was a slim win the first time, and Ohio was corrupt. Same way, Sununu and Coleman were slim wins, Colorado is trending blue, and Smith is a disgrace to the state of Oregon that we will kick to the curb quite handily. Lots can happen between now and then and I really hope we expose these Republican asshats for what they are and the whole county turns blue. This is just how I see it right now.

42. Sorry to say it, but I think Domenici has that seat...
...for as long as he wants it. He funnels huge amounts of pork and military spending to New Mexico, and given how poor our state is, that's a Very Big Deal. He has the seniority on various committees to get what he wants in the horsetradin' stage, and the experience to screw the best deal out of any negotiation.

He's an old-school GOPpie pol without the slightest vestige of a conscience, as far as I can tell, but smart enough not to cross the line and to always keep his options open, his constituent services office busy, and his nose in the right funders' buttcracks.

We're pretty much stuck with him until he decides to pack it in.

regretfully,
Bright

I totally disagree with Hugh.

For one thing, we have 22 seats to defend in '08. The RATs only have 12.

My big fear is we have a lot of GOP retirements and have a number of open seats to defend. We are also going to have a tougher time recruiting top quality candidates now that we are in the Minority.

I'm not giving up hope by any stretch, but we might as well acknowledge what a tough road we have ahead of us."

He's popular and could beat Alexander. I think Mark Warner goes for the VA seat even if Warner doesn't retire. Mark Warner is super popular and barely lost to Warner last time.

If Domenici retires, Udall will likely get that seat easily if Richardson doesn't want it.

I think the Dems will gain seats big time in 2008.

63. We'll be coming after him, that's for sure
Our state party is a mess, but we do have some strong county parties in urban areas. In 2004, after three decades of losing seats in the legislature, we had a net gain of one... this year we won six (one in a special election in the spring and five more on Tuesday. And we lost several other races by narrow margins. If the planets line up just right, Senator Box Turtle could be brought down.

59. Chambliss looks like a good target
Graham, maybe.

Cornyn -- I don't know. You never how Texans are going to vote.

Inhoffe and McConnell are a couple I'd really, really like to bring down. Anybody have any ideas of the possibilities.

67. He is not up for re-election in 2008
He just won re-election this year, and West Virginia's Governor, Joe Manchin, could appoint a good replacement (he's a Democrat) or he could appoint himself.

64. It will be wonderful to see Coleman kicked out.
I think that 02 gave many Republicans an unlikely chance of winning, given Bush's poluarity, etc... But 08 will be another year that won't be good for Repugs.

65. Coleman's, Allard's, Smith's, Sununu's, and Domenici's states are all
turning blue. St. Pete probably won't be dislodged as long as SNL and LANL stay open though. But the others are ripe for picking.

66. The Dems are all easy-reelect contests, but...
the Rep list isn't. *At least* these are vulnerable: Coleman, Craig, Dole, Stevens, Warner.

69. not all
Landrieu definitely won't have a cakewalk and while Tim Johnson is pretty popular now, he only won in 2002 by the narrowest of margins.

72. maybe 1-2 DEM losses, and 4-6 Repub losses
woohoo hopefully MORE gains!!!

I'd love a 9 seat gain (wouldn't you all?) but we may have a 55-45 commanding lead after the election.

It's so nice we can talk like this, because a week ago, this woulda been mocked as pipe dreams... lol.
