Why doesn't anyone care about Texas Hispanics?
Even amidst the Republican resurgence of past two decades, former Governor Bill Clements made a public appeal to fellow Republicans for greater attention to Latino voters in an editorial in 1998 in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times:

"Hispanics must have an important role in the future of the Republican Party of Texas. If they don't, in a few years when people talk of minorities, they won't be talking about Hispanics. They'll be referring to Texas Republicans."

1. Actually they'll be referring to "Anglos"
The birth rate among Hispanics is about twice what it is among anglos. It won't take too many more years for Hispanics to attain majority status.

5. Are they 51% of those eligible to vote?
or 51% of the total Texas population?

7. Many Hispanics are underage
From what I heard and read, in some regions, the Hispanic population has a large number, if not a majority, of people under the age of 18.

9. Oh, good. "Anglos."
That means I'll be refering to the Spanish migrating in from Mexico much more frequently than I do now.

It usually ticks off Latinos who resent being called by the ethnonym of their ancestors' conquerors just like being called by the ethnonym of his ancestors' conquerors ticks off this Celt.

3. They do
only when the grapefruits are ready to pick or a new parking lot needs to be paved. You could write books on Texans and racism.

6. I think they forget that many have voting rights....
I mean, I know in NC the usual response is "Aren't they all illegal? Who cares!"..... At least that is what I hear from my Repug neighbors....

Many Repugs fail to take the long view..... Thier loss :)

8. Generally, they vote at very low rates. Here in Texas we've done much to
try to fix that situation, but with little luck. I had great hope that the immigration marches would result in more Tejano voter registrations and actual votes, but I was once again disappointed. Also, another generalization is that they vote based on a candidate's race rather than the candidate's positions on racial (or non-racial) issues in slightly higher percentages as compared to some other minorities.
