If Lincoln Chafee Changes Parties
He should be top billing as one of the keynote speakers at our convention in '08.

His voice would reach out to moderate independents across the country and help further marginalize the GOP as the party of extremist nutbags.

He could be our Zell Miller.

2. He'd have to refuse to change parties to be Zell Miller
Stay a registered Republican who always endorses Democrats and trashes his own party. That would be a Zell Miller in reverse.

4. Of all the election results...
his upset me the most. I really like the guy. He is what moderation is about. I'll trade 3 Joe Libermans for 1 Lincoln Chafee.

will finally learn from this experience and formerly switch parties. I think he has a lot of self examination to do. Like, why did he put the little perks that he could bring back to RI, ahead of the destruction the GOP was doing to the country as a whole?

8. A book recounting what he's seen in these years
would be enormously helpful to the American people. And, an honest moral inventory is after all the first step in recovery!

11. The perks excuse bothered me, too.
He's a SENATOR. He's supposed to work for the best interested of the entire country, not
pork barrel for his home state. Leave that to Congresspersons! (Only kidding, folks.)

9. I'm glad I wasn't a Rhode Islander
it must have been a hard decision. They did what they needed to do though, they knew the consequences of taking those chairmanships. Chaffee is that rare old type Republican who actually was a decent person. He didn't belong, too bad he didn't do this last spring.

14. Mookie Wilson---one of my favorite ballplayers!
The last play of game 6 of the '86 Series---he (you?) was gonna beat out that ball, even if Buckner hadn't missed it.

18. Exactly right.
No way Buckner's going to beat Mook to the bag. The distance was too great and his momentum was taking him into foul territory.

It was Stanley's fault for not breaking towards the bag. Poor Buckner.

(after Jeffords having defected) it might make Olympia Snowe and/or Susan Collins a lttle wobbly.

17. Chafee even says he's glad the Democrats took over
I mean, obviously he's not glad that he personally lost his seat, but he says that it may have been necessary in order to turn around this mess that Shrub has created.

He is one GOP I'd invite to my dinner table (the invitation is real and stands) anytime. Nothing fancy, but I'll make something nice for you.

16. He would never be a Zell Miller
To show integrity Lincoln should change party affiliation ASAP and do everything he can to demonstrate his sincerity with fundraisers and political functions. If he waits until just before the filing deadline for an election it won't be as honest looking.

Much much different than announcing a party switch after winning an election.

enough to be a cabinet member.

...in the vein of Ron Reagan Jr.

Maybe, as an (I), he'll run for Governor of Rhode Island in 2010, making it an interesting three-way race?

25. I like that
I wonder since he lost his last election (kind of sad but kind of happy too) if he would do that still or stay a republican. But either way he should be invited for helping us out and offered a speaking spot if he wanted. He might not though so who knows.

30. We don't want or need any "Zell Millers." If Chafee wants to switch, fine but
he should get no special consideration in 08. If he should want to run for something as a Democrat let him take his chances with the voters like everyone else. We do not need any whores to carry our message.
