US vetoes UN resolution condemning Israel on Gaza
11 Nov 2006 18:52:15 GMT

By Irwin Arieff

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 11 (Reuters) - The United States on Saturday vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution urging an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and condemning an Israeli attack there that killed 18 Palestinian civilians.

Nine of the council's 15 members voted for the measure, while four abstained: Britain, Denmark, Japan and Slovakia.

But the "no" vote cast by U.S. Ambassador John Bolton -- his second since he arrived at U.N. headquarters in August 2005 -- was enough to kill the resolution.

Bolton's first veto, on July 13, 2006, killed a resolution reacting to an earlier Israeli incursion in Gaza.

The United States has cast 82 vetoes in the United Nations' 61 years, and nine of the last 10 council vetoes, seven of which dealt with the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

The measure defeated on Saturday was backed by Arab, Islamic and nonaligned nations and formally proposed by Qatar.

It would have called on the Palestinian Authority to "take immediate and sustained action to bring an end to violence, including the firing of rockets on Israeli territory."

It would have urged the international community to take steps to stabilize the situation, revive the Middle East peace process and consider "the possible establishment of an international mechanism" for the protection of civilians.

It also would have condemned Israeli military operations in Gaza and called on the Jewish state to withdraw all troops from Gaza and end its operations in all Palestinian lands.

ACCIDENTAL 'TECHNICAL FAILURE'

Seven children and four women were among the dead in Wednesday's shelling of Beit Hanoun, for which Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has apologized, calling it an accidental "technical failure" by the Israeli military.

But Palestinian leaders have called it a massacre.

12. I don't believe we should have vetoed
this, but you're the one attacking- not the so-called Israeli fanatics. Talk about you're pot and kettle. Go take a look in the mirror- although it may crack under the weight of the ugly hypocricy you're demonstrating. Cognitive dissonance to the max- and that goes for the little echo chamber following your oh-so-charming post.

All Israeli's are jews... and I had no idea the majority of Israel was behind this current agenda... hmmm. I'll have to tell my Israeli/Jewish friends. Also, I had no idea ALL Palestinians were "Terrorists". You sure you know what you are talking about? Nevermind...

Wanted: Richard Steve Goldberg

<snip>

"Doesn't this guy look like he was destined to be on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List?

http://www.fbi.gov/wanted.htm

His name is Richard Steve Goldberg, and he's wanted for for allegedly engaging in sexual activities with several little girls under the age of ten.

Osama bin Laden still tops the FBI's ten most wanted list. I find it puzzling that Richard and Osama are in the same, elite circle of international villains. Their backgrounds are as different as their crimes. Richard grew up a poor Jewish boy in Brooklyn. Osama, the scion of a Muslim family of great wealth and influence. One from the Sheikdom, the other from the Shtetl.

It is said that the one thing in life we cannot pick is our family. But, as Richard and Osama can attest, we can find ourselves belonging to a group we would not necessarily pick for ourselves."

7. We can't let this happen!
Why, imagine if we put the whip to the PA and made them clean up their mess, like this resolution calls for! Violence may decrease! If not, there might be international punishment! How horrible! Without rockets fired into Israel, what would be the Israeli excuse for occupation and murder in "retaliation"? Clearly it's impreitive that we must allow Hamas and their ilk to attack Israel, for the good of Israel!

...I would use the sarcasm tag, but i'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic or not :(

and destroy the Middle East as we know it. Geesh............

You know what is interesting? The Israeli's WANT to give back the GAZA strip. At least the Israeli PEOPLE do. What does that tell us?

25. It tells us that they're terror-loving scum!
...ugh. Okay. Sorry, I'll drop out of my freeper disguise.

It tells us that yes, the people running the show have a vested interest in continued violence. Considering how much float money and political immunity the guys and gals running Israel get because of Palestinian terror, it's definately in their best interests - financially and with regards to personal power - to do their part to not combat, and indeed encourage terrorism.

You can't beat Hamas by using their tactics.

13. What a weird resultion
I disagree strongly with a UN resoltuion calling for attacks on Israeli territory with rockets.

The rest didn't seem so bad, though.

I have to admit I agree with this veto because of the posioned pill of rocket attacks.

20. I would have supported the passage of this resolution
The fact that it called on the Palestinian Authority to take "immediate and sustained action" to stop attacks is good enough for me.
