Bush stands by his man for U.N. envoy

WASHINGTON -- President Bush will not relent in his defense of John Bolton, his nominee for U.N. ambassador, despite unwavering opposition from Democrats who view Bolton as too combative for international diplomacy, aides said Sunday.

Two of Bush's top advisers said the White House is not backing down from a fight to win Senate approval for Bolton to continue in the job. Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. That appointment will expire when Congress adjourns, no later than January.

White House counselor Dan Bartlett said Bolton has done a remarkable job. "He's proven the critics wrong on all the charges they've leveled against him," Bartlett said. "So let's have a conversation about it. We'll see."

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination on Thursday, though it has languished in the Senate for more than a year. Finding a replacement for Bolton would come at a sensitive time for the Bush administration. It is counting heavily on U.N. diplomacy to help confront North Korea and Iran over their nuclear programs and to end fighting in Sudan's Darfur region.

3. The silence is deafening
He doesn't exactly have a brilliant track record of being open-minded or bipartisan - he's arrogant and stubborn. I'm not convinced that he or many of the right-wingers learned a thing from this election. Consequently, he'll probably continue strutting around and declaring himself "the decider".

6. He already broke the promise.
And Biden said it well today on ABC's show when he said that if Bush is truly serious about his promise to be bi-partisan he will offer someone other than Bolton. Finally. The media spin has been to question whether or not the Dems will keep their promise by considering Bolton. They did not mention the fact that the offer of Bolton was indeed a partisan act.

11. We as citizens know enough not to let our guard down
But let's hope that our newly elected Democratic Congress is not gullible enough to believe them when they say they want to work with the Dems. And they'd better not be so spineless that they're willing to take them at their word just to avoid confrontation and "gridlock".
Bolton is Exhibit A.

12. Screw letting our guard down.
Let's stoke the fires of Democracy. Let us demand what we know is called for. When we lead from the netroots (the back), we have to push our leaders in the direction they should go. Investigate and see where that leads us. Unfortunately the conciliatory tone out of the Dem Leadership leaves a lot to be desired.
