Who Won Secretary of State in Your State?
Even though Corpress isn't reporting on the e-vote problems, they occurred in great numbers all over the country. The Brad Blog keeps up on it, as well as VoteTrustUSA who posts Daily Voting News at both places.

Here in Nevada, we now have a Democratic Sec of State, Ross Miller. California has Debra Bowen, who is very aware of the problems with the e-vote machines, and Ohio (YES, OHIO!!!) has the wonderous Jennifer Brunner.

I'm curious how many States elected Democratic Secs of State. Please post them here if you know!

Sarah Palin was just elected governor here, Parnell is her Lt. Hopefully, he won't be as shady as the last guy, Loren Leman.

8. In IL Sec of State does not control elections
It is done at the county level in most cases. OUr republican run election here in Kane county was so flubbed one paper that endorsed the incumbent wrote today they regretted endorsing him (this from the right leaning Daily Herald)

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — State Sen. Francis Heitmeier dropped out of the runoff election Tuesday to become Louisiana's next secretary of state, essentially handing the post to his colleague, state Sen. Jay Dardenne.

The democrat DROPPED out of the run-offs.

19. We had an open primary in Sept
The top two go to a runoff if no one get 50%.

Here were the totals:

56,000 9% Mary Chehardy, R -
11,685 2% Rayburn Clipper, L -
24,232 4% James "Jim" Crowley, III, N -
190,845 30% "Jay" Dardenne, R -
167,714 26% "Mike" Francis, R -
178,686 28% Francis C. Heitmeier, D -
12,811 2% Allen "Al" Leone, R

If you add the R votes up, he didn't have a chance.(427,370 Rep to 178,686 Dem with 35,917 Ind/Lib)

I keep telling DUers, Louisiana is getting very red.

Iowa here. The newly elected SOS is a Democrat who won against the personal pick of Rove? Not sure of that but she's worked in the Whitehouse with the Shrub for the past 6 years and only came back to Iowa to run for SOS.

And I'll bet you can guess when that changed from the old way of just electing them, can't you. :eyes:

http://www.myflorida.com/myflorida/cabinet/cabprocess.html

NEW CABINET STRUCTURE

In 1998 the Constitutional Revision Commission proposed a rewrite of Article IV, Section IV of the Florida Constitution that reduced the Florida Cabinet from six elected officials to three. Effective January 7, 2003, the new Florida Cabinet consists of the Attorney General, the Chief Financial Officer and the Commissioner of Agriculture. The Cabinet offices of Secretary of State and Commissioner of Education became appointed offices and their respective agencies became the responsibility of the Governor. The revised constitution also created a new State Board of Education with seven members appointed by the Governor to oversee the Department of Education. The Cabinet offices of Treasurer and Comptroller were merged into the new position of Chief Financial Officer who serves as agency head for the newly created Department of Financial Services.

23. Jan Brewer - and she likes DIEBOLD machines. Ugh!
Israel Torres sadly got trounced, although he knew better than to allow the DREs into Arizona.

Fortunately, a lot of people vote by mail here, and most of the counties have paper ballots and/or an optical scanner.

28. Doesn't AZ have "Clean Elections"?
i.e. isn't AZ one of the states that have publicly funded campaign laws?

See NOW! - Votes for Sale? at PBS.

Time to get those $5 donations going for a new SoS candidate for the next election, preferably a DU'r from AZ involved in the DU Election Reform board ;-)

And, get ready for Hand Counted Paper Ballots! Now that the 110th Congress will be controlled by Democrats, Dennis Kucinich's H.R. 6200, the Paper Ballot Act of 2006 may become The Law of the Land!

Check out Democracy For New Hampshire's We're Counting the Votes: An Election Preparedness Kit and send this to ALL your elected officials!

Let's all lay the groundwork for HCPB NOW!

Ron Thornborough, or something like that. And he's already brought Diebold in.

I'm counting on a Democratic Congress to do something to reduce the threat of electronic vote fraud. Naively, I'm afraid.

40. Wisconsin: Democrat Doug LaFollette.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_LaFollette

"June 6, 1940) is a United States academic, environmental activist, and politician in the state of Wisconsin. He is the current Secretary of State of Wisconsin.

LaFollette was born in Des Moines, Iowa and obtained degrees from Marietta College (B.A.), Stanford University (M.S. Chemistry), and Columbia University (Ph.D. Organic Chemistry). He began a teaching career as an assistant professor at University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha. He is a distant cousin of Robert M. La Follette, Sr.

Known as an environmental activist before running for public office, in 1970 he was a Wisconsin organizer of the first Earth Day for Gaylord Nelson, and co-founded Wisconsin's Environmental Decade (now known as Clean Wisconsin) with Peter Anderson.

He first ran for office in 1970, losing the Democratic primary election for the 1st Congressional District to Les Aspin. He served in the Wisconsin State Senate for Kenosha for one term. LaFollette currently serves as the Wisconsin Secretary of State, a post to which he was first elected in 1974. He lost a 1978 bid for re-election. He was elected to the office again in 1982 and has been the incumbent Secretary of State since that time. He has often run unopposed, and shuns fundraising in the style of former Wisconsin Sen. William Proxmire and current Sen. Russ Feingold. In 1990, his opponent -- Madison attorney and radio personality Stuart Levitan -- campaigned on a promise to eliminate the Secretary of State's office, whose duties have been reduced and transferred to other agencies including the State Board of Elections under LaFollette's tenure."

41. Michigan-Terri Lynn Land (R)
She's not the worst republican out there. Although I voted for the dem, I have no problem with Ms. Land. She is known for being an ethical person, and the line at the SOS on my birthday a couple of weeks ago was not long, so she did a good job her first term. She also doesn't plaster her name all over the buildings and signs like the last one (Candace Miller, R). The last dem SOS in Michigan was a very nice, but very old man (Richard Austin) and the system was way behind the times then.
