Conservatives in South LA backing Jefferson for reelection
Jefferson being investigated for 100K in his freezer and other things is in a runoff for his congressional seat. He is getting support from conservatives in the New Orleans suburbs against Democratic State Representative Karen Carter. Conservatives don't want Carter, from New Orleans, to get the seat. They want Jefferson to be reelected hoping he will have to resign because of the scandal then they will have a better chance of getting one of their own in congress (in the guise of a democrat.) If Carter wins the election that ploy won't work. Conservatives in the suburbs just don't like Nawlins at all

The majority of the votes didn't go to Jefferson, so it will be interesting to see what the run-off produces. I voted for Karen once, I'll happily do it again!

5. Thanks! That's a great site!
I hope voters weren't confused by having 2 Carters! Good luck to Karen!

6. Re-electing Jefferson would send the wrong message
about a newly cleaned house and as mentioned, would be like throwing red meat to Republicans.

7. Agreed
To paraphrase the Biblical parable, we have to remove the log from our own eye before we remove the speck from the GOP eye. If they're corrupt they have to go, ESPECIALLY if they live in our house.

8. Carter appeared in Spike Lee's Katrina film, attacking the racist
police behavior on the West Bank Bridge. That may be another reason why the Jefferson Parish third of the District (post-Katrina) wants the crook. Louisiana is comfortable with crooks, but not with those who question the social order

And who was the SECOND candidate with the same last name as Carter? Between them, they got more than the incumbent. See http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006//pages/results/states/LA/H/02/index.html .

I thought that kind of dirty trick went out with the 1950s.

10. The 'other' Carter...
...is Troy Carter, a Democratic former New Orleans City Councilmember.

9. Jefferson must go
Karen Carter is very articulate and would be an improvement over Jefferson. The new Democratic majority doesn't need a corrupt person like Jefferson.
