GOP Rep To Face Ethics Investigation?
By Paul Kiel - November 14, 2006, 11:33 AM
Here's something to keep an eye on in the new Congress.

There's convincing evidence out there that Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) unethically used his congressional staff to aid his re-election campaign. Will the House Ethics Committee do anything about it?

A couple of weeks ago, a reporter confronted Murphy with documents showing he'd violated ethics rules by having staffers work on his campaign. Murphy's outraged response indicates how seriously he takes the charge: he snatched the paper away from a local reporter -- with cameras rolling. After the election, he fired the whisteblowing staffer. She violated his office's policy forbidding contact with the press, he said.

You HAVE to watch the video - a KDKA reporter (Pittsburgh) shows Murphy the evidence of ethics violations and Murphy actually snatches the evidence from the reporter's hand!!!

2. I saw that video. It was something else.
Wasn't Murphy recently in the news on another matter, trying to make a name for himself? I can't remember what the subject was, but he was railing against Democrats in a big way.

Oh, well, just another Repub in an empty suit. :)

3. I saw that awhile back, it was pretty damned outrageous.
I can't see how they can avoid looking into this thing, frankly.

4. Surprise, surprise!!
These guys got so used to being the only ones in charge, and they became complacent because they knew the ethics committee had no bite or bark.

I'm glad Pelosi and Reid are going to make ethics a huge part of the new congress and there should be a zero tolerance policy for ALL ethical breeches - GOP OR Dem.

5. Well, well, well... If you've done nothing wrong, then you should have
nothing to worry about, 'eh, murphy? That's what your friend john ashcroft would certainly say.

6. He grabbed that sheet like he'd never heard of a photocopier
I seem to recall that in the old Soviet Union, private possession of a photocopier was forbidden. And after watching the governing shenanigans of the GOP for the last five or six years, I suppose Mr. Murphy can be forgiven if he thought he was back in the good old days under Uncle Joe. He probably dreams he's Lavrenty Beria.

9. It would have rocked
If Murphy tackled the reporter when the reporter was talking about Murphy and was alone against the night sky. It would have added some nice unrealism to the whole thing.

"Murphy's comment that he had nothing to do with th-" AAAAAAAAH! WUMP!

10. I'm not sure about this one.
This is one time I think the rules should be changed. I think that the people that work for you should be allowed to work on your campaign. I think it's a stupid rule. If you work with someone for a year and a half or two years you build a strong relationship with them, and you trust that person. If someone can explain to me why this is bad, I am open minded and I will listen. But, my gut instinct says that you should be able to use staff people on your campaign.

11. Then who is paying for these workers?
Their salary comes out of our tax dollars.

If these people want to help re-elect him then they can volunteer on their own time
