A nice attaboy for the State of Kansas
The New York Times has a nice little piece about what the red state of Kansas did during this last election:

Very nice job Kansans! Rock Chalk Jayhawk?!?

2. Yeah, I'm willing to send some kudos to Kansas...
Dear Kansas,

You've evolved... Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Prag.

4. The "evolution" of Kansas is a work in progress.
Progress and regression are locked in a constant battle in the Wheat State. Their school board could be endorsing intelligent design again next year. You never know.

6. Read the excerpt below--intelligent design in no more an issue in KS.
Victories by moderate Democrats and Republicans ended conservative control of the Kansas State Board of Education, which tried to replace evolution with creationism in public school classrooms.

9. Yes, that's true today.
But we've already seen it cycle twice.

I'm glad that Kansas is thinking seriously about emerging from the 1860s. As one who lived there for nearly 20 years, I have nothing but hope for them.

Think of it this way: It's a wonderful sign that the shockingly insane Jim Ryun was voted out this cycle. But how the hell was he ever elected? And re-elected?

Stay tuned. The maturation of Kansas is hardly complete.

in this latest election cycle.

5. Tell that to my entire extended family, all active yella-dawgs.
All successful educators, businessmen, and MDs.

Open your mind--your heart will follow.

8. That's the beauty of the yella-dogs...
It takes a monumental effort, but, once they see the light they never give it up.

3. My dad was a Jayhawk and there's a hundred more with his last name
still fighting that good yella-dawg fight there.

Victories by moderate Democrats and Republicans ended conservative control of the Kansas State Board of Education, which tried to replace evolution with creationism in public school classrooms.

And for us, one of the most satisfying results was the resounding defeat of Attorney General Phill Kline, an anti-abortion zealot who gained national notoriety by misusing his office to further his ideology. He tried to force health care workers to file reports on the sexual activity of teens, and to seize women’s confidential medical records. That gross assault on privacy and legal rights was a major issue in the campaign. The 58-to-42 landslide that elected a former Republican, Paul Morrison, was a victory for moderation and the rule of law.

I love my home state and knew they'd wise up!

Great read, thanks.

12. Sorry about that teammate
My mother in law lives in a nice little town in North Kansas. There used to be nothing but Jayhawk paraphernalia dotting the lawns (25 years ago) but now it is at least half Wildcats. My wife and I alternate flying a Jayhawk and a Razorback flag in front of our house in South Mississippi.

Spent some TAD time at the old Naval Air Station in Olathe a long, long time ago.

15. We sure did
If a team has Kansas in its title my wife is a fan. I took great pleasure in seeing the Longhorns spanked. There is a tad bit of whining about the game over in the sports forum. Yeah, I remember that SI edition. K-State was pretty tragic (sportswise) back then.

19. I had just joined KSU when the article was printed....
I had come from Colorado, so I was familiar with KSU from following Big Eight sports. I knew KSU was horrible, but I didn't realize the history.

SI listed the most futile football teams from an historical perspective. KSU was dead last in winning percentage and was so far behind the next-to-last team that KSU would have had to have 8 straight 10-0 seasons with the next-to-last team losing every game in order to pass them. Much to our surprise, KSU managed to emerge from the cellar in just over 10 years.

Nice to see KSU back on track with the win over Texas.

I was there during the Cheese Johnson years, Antoine Carr & his brother, Randy Smithson - golden years when we beat KU in basketball AND in baseball in the same year.

14. It is great, isn't it?
We still have a long way to go, but things are looking up. A lot of moderate Republicans defected this year, and many registered Repubs voted for Dems. Now we need to go after the senators, and work some more of the wingnuts out of our state legislature!

16. And our SOS!
He is so firmly in position and I want him GONE like yesterday. I am afraid he is there for as long as he wants the job.

I have to admit that his staff is helpful and very polite, every time I have had to go file papers they have been wonderful. But he is a jerk IMO but such a good family man :eyes:.

I guess I can wait until we unseat Pat Roberts since he affects far more people, that in itself is going to be a huge thing and difficult but if we can rid ourselves of Ryun then anything is possible.

Now that would be a barnburner of an election. If I were her I wouldn't want to trapse off the Washington though.

21. Thanks for posting that
The article doesn't mention this, but progressives and moderates also won a majority on the state Board of Education, seizing control back from the anti-evolution fundie freaks.

And Boyda's defeat of Ryun in the 2nd District was absolutely spectacular!

Last Tuesday was truly a great day to be a Kansan, as well as an American! :patriot:

22. The article does mention
the state school board elections. I was a big fan of Ryun when he was a runner (I ran myself.) But he is completely loony tunes. Good for Kansas on sending him packing.

26. Oops!
Skimmed right over that little paragraph.

I've heard Ryun's wife is seriously batshit crazy, too. Other politicos in DC would avoid them like the plague because she weirded them out so much. I think Ryun's running career is the only reason he stayed in office as long as he did- that, and the overall red politics of the state. Glad that all seems to be changing.
