Schweitzer as a "dark horse" in 2008? Novakula says "he would be a fool not to..."
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 08:40 PM by jefferson_dem

Could he be the proverbial dark horse in 2008? Here's what Count Novakula has to say --

Brian Schweitzer: It's a bit of a stretch, but this little-known governor of Montana may be a Democratic dark horse. Thanks to a massively corrupt state GOP, Schweitzer came back from a close loss in 2000 to Sen. Burns to win the governor's race, install narrow Democratic majorities in both the state House and the state Senate and to elect Jon Tester to the U.S. Senate over Burns. He is just a first-term governor, but now that there is a vacuum to Hillary's right, he would be a fool not to look at a run at President or at least Vice President.

2. Mine too!
“If I stay in Washington for more than 72 hours, ... I have to bathe myself in the same stuff I use when my dog gets into a fight with a skunk.”

Ahhh, a man who sees DC as it really is.

10. done!
In church (Im a Lutheran) we pledge "our time, ourselves, and our possessions." In the spirit of that pledge, I told him he'd get my vote, my time, and $500.

3. he'd be great
and he wouldn't run to the right. He'd run as a populist and that is the key to victory.

4. A candidate like that would appeal to progressives and independents
leaving @ 30% to vote for whatever nutjob the GOP nominates. Schweitzer is the rancher Bush pretends to be.

We have only had two senators elected president in the last 100 years to so.

He would easily win Montana (only 3 evs) but could flip other western and southern states, imo.

There are plenty of reasons he should run. See my signature.

Plain talking, straight shooting. Not the typical bullshit artist that most in Washington seem to be.

13. He's a cool dude for sure and I absolutely love his dog.
A straight talking, gun toting cowboy (of the real--not faux variety) could be just the ticket for the Democrats.

My only objection is that he's a bit lacking in experience. He has lived in the Middle East and knows the region so that's a plus.

But would Jaq be happy in DC?

15. David Sirota took a leave of absense to work on his campaign.
That's pretty much what I need to know. Sirota is one of my favorite anti-DLC-ers in the media. The fact that he likes this guy would make me want to definitely find out more about him.

19. He is a governor of a conservative state
Now we may say we support him here right now, but do we know his positions on abortions, gay marriages ect.

He would the one to bridge the gap in taking swing states like OH & FL. But I do not see him taking any hard red states other than his own only because a state like Montana would like to see their man as president.

20. Hey, I like Brian, but He did not elect Jon Tester
Or install majorities. The people did it. The Washington Insiders like Novakula want to keep spinning great men theories. It was one man that did this or one man that did that. Insiders hate democracy. But last week it was the 50 State Strategy and activists. The grass roots elected Tester with a lot of hard work. The grass roots picked Tester over the DLC and moderate backed primary opponent, John Morrison, let's not forget. Hundreds of new volunteers filled the streets of Bozeman, MT on election day and the months prior to it. Gallatin County is still counting, but it could be the first time this Republican stronghold goes Democratic. It was hard working ex Kucinich and Dean supporters that stuck around after 2004 to work on the state and local level. Schweitzer lost Gallatin County by 2000 votes in 2004. Tester lost by only 164 votes on election night and that could change. On election night we lost our majority in the Senate and the House. It looks like we got the Senate back because a Republican switched. And if the tie holds, the Governor would appoint the Democrat in the last race to be counted and that would give a narrow one vote majority in the House. How much he will be able to get done will show his leadership abilities.
Brian Schweitzer is smart and loves politics and has that optimistic quality that a great front man should have, but he's just getting started.

22. Isn't he cool. Apparently he goes everywhere with Schweitzer
He's also a real working dog. They showed him moving cattle on 60 Minutes.

Take that Barney!

Confession, I have a Border Collie (probably a mix) and my previous dog was also a Border Collie. I love them sensitive, hardworking, a bit on the high strung side but you can't beat them for smarts. I also have a Thoroughbred horse so I guess I like smart, sensitive animals.

25. That's called the watch eye
My present border collie doesn't have one, but I had an Australian Shepard and a Blue Heeler that both had the 'Watch eye'.

Border collies rule, and indeed, it might be fun to watch Schweitzer's dog, Jag, work the press corps if the team ever made it to the White house.

27. Wouldn't it be great to have a President who really is a cowboy
and a Dem?

And Jag would make a heckuva first dog. Jag's more intelligent than the current resident of the WH.

I actually feel sorry for Barney being carried around by the fool and being dropped.

I'd vote for Schweitzer in a heart beat.
