3. Seriously. Alaska has to get the idea that there's NO UPSIDE of re-electing him...
Starting with shifting some of *ALL* THE MONEY going up there down to some of the.. I don't know... BLUE STATES???

for a long time. My guess is that it's about time to start ponying up their fair share- or going back to the "rugged individualism" that many claim to want.

7. I agree-there's no one more firmly attached to the state tit than those
who bray about rugged individualism (mostly western states, IIRC).

5. I think he's genuinely senile
One time recently, he spent ten minutes rambling on the Senate floor then asked the President Pro Temp what they were sposed to be talking about.

I think they should take him by the arm, and lead out to the Capitol steps where the transport to the nursing home would be waiting.

8. I think he's up for re-election in 2008
Wouldn't it be nice if Alaska's Democrats could put up a viable candidate against this senile old coot?

10. Sounds an awful lot like Robert Byrd as well..
WV has enjoyed a ton of earmarks and federal dollars during his reign in the Senate.

12. Byrd just stood for re-election
And won 64-34; the people of West Virginia seem to like his brand of representation. I'm not sure the people of Alaska really enjoy the laughingstock that Sen. Stevens portrays. But we'll see in 2008.

11. Ted has indicated that he will run again in 2008
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 12:38 PM by Blue_In_AK
We have several Democrats here who could challenge him. The issue, as in the House race this year, is money. Ted and Don Young both have the capability of raising millions of corporate dollars for their campaigns in very short order, while Alaska democrats are pretty much overlooked by the national Democratic party. We ran a wonderful candidate against Rep. Don Young this time around but in spite of our literally begging for some help from the DCCC we got nada. Even so our candidate got 40% of the votes running a 100 percent grassroots campaign financed by many, many contributions from individuals. This is an extremely expensive state to campaign in...1/5 the size of the rest of the US but with a road system about the size of Rhode Island's. Thousands and thousands of Alaskans live off the road system in small towns and villages that a candidate can only reach by airplane or boat. These old incumbents like Stevens and Young keep winning on name recognition only and their ability to finance trips out into the Bush. If the dems had the finances to get the candidates out to the villages to make themselves known we might be able to shake some of these old dinosaurs.

Please don't trash-talk Alaskans. We are no more or less greedy than anyone else in the US. Many of us have issues with the old politicians, and most of us don't want the stupid bridges, so try to refrain from all the "rugged individualism" slams, etc. It really doesn't accomplish much.

Thank for your concern.

ed. Gratuitous, my last paragraph was directed more to the posters up-thread, not you.
