Why were there 235 votes cast in this race?
I heard that the newly elected Democrats did not get to vote on this,so why is the number so high?

1. Actually I think they did
Otherwise the fact that so many of them endorsed Hoyer wouldn't mean much. As for the remaining 5, are they the non-voting delegates from DC and the Protectorates? :shrug:

231 new full members of the House, four representatives of U.S. territories and two Democrats involved in runoffs or recounts.
