Swiftboated by Pelosi!
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 03:20 PM by partylessinOhio
You could see that Murtha's heart was broken on Capitol Hill today.

If Pelosi didn't have the votes she should not have encouraged Murtha to run for Majority Leader. She set Murtha up to lose. You don't treat an elderly veteran like that unless you are a ruthless woman.

Edit to Add: (I heard it reported today on MSNBC that) Steny Hoyer released the Abscam tape to the media. (If that is true) Hoyer should never have done that. Murtha did nothing wrong and was never charged with anything.

This is our new leadership? Looks like I may be partylessinWashington too.

He's withstood the attacks from the right, he'll bounce back.

2. Swiftboated by Pelosi... that sounds pretty damn ridiculous to me
Murtha did nothing wrong, but he didn't handle it as well as he could have. The tapes have been out for years, and Hannity was on this shit before this race even started.

Amoroso: Let me ask you now that we're together. I was under the impression, OK, and I told Howard what we were willing to pay, and I went out, I got the $50,000. OK? So what you're telling me, OK, you're telling me that that's not what you know....

Murtha: I'm not interested.

Amoroso: OK.

Murtha: At this point, you know, we do business together for a while. Maybe I'll be interested and maybe I won't.... Right now, I'm not interested in those other things. Now, I won't say that some day, you know, I, if you made an offer, it may be I would change my mind some day.

7. Woman can't win. She's wrong for backing him (I went with that
one), she's wrong for backing him and then he loses.

Murtha put his hat in the ring. He should have, and I'm sure he did, understand that it could come out like this. I thought it would go his way, but that's just because of his stand on Iraq. Apparently the dems in Washington felt otherwise.

Whatever.

21. Maybe they just thought Steny Hoyer would be a better majority leader?
Being able to play one instrument doesn't mean you can lead the orchestra.

23. You know what, I don't care who they picked. Because so far,
I don't know a damn thing about what kind of majority leader he'll be.

My crystal ball ain't helping on this one. I have to wait and see.

25. Well, if past performance is any indication, Steny Hoyer was a no brainer
pick for majority leader. Actually he would probably be the speaker if he were a she. Hoyer has more leadership credentials in the House than anyone else, including Pelosi. Murtha, on the other hand, has hardly any leadership experience (other than committee) in the House, nor did he ever show any interest in any until the Dems got the majority back.

4. She was really stuck there
if Murtha won, she would have someone who was not popular with many, if he lost she would have to work with someone she worked against. This is the shit that gives politics it's well-deserved reputation.

I do not envy any of them, they can have it.

5. WHAT?!?!?!?!
Of all the insane, trolling, nonsense, deliberately divisive attacks on the Democrats I've seen on DU, this is absolutely the most obvious and inane.

Misogyny or bad judgement, which is it? If you don't like a woman leading the House, just say so.

9. Pelosi would have won more goodwill from the caucus by supporting Hoyer
I think in this case she stood on principle, often repeating the fact that Murtha turned the tide on the rubberstamp Congress's support for the occupation.

26. Yup, Murtha lost the rubber stamp
That is what is nice about the Democrats, they don't follow like sheep. The media likes to make a big deal out of a vote that is simply a part of the process. Nancy did just fine.

Now, back to discussing Lott as whip.....

Better yet, how fine is having control of Congress! Who will be the first Dem. to start an investigation into our intelligence agencies, etc.

10. Didn't Murtha challenge Pelosi for the speaker?
Am I remembering that right? Anyway, the caucus chose, not Nancy. Murtha tested Pelosi to see if she was weak and got burnt. Turns out she's tough as nails. I can't feel bad for anyone who has the rare opportunity to serve in Congress.

So far all we have is that it was "reported today on MSNBC". That is not good enough for me, don't know about you. In my book, that is as definitive as "I heard it on the radio" or "I read it somewhere." I need a bit more than that before I am going to accept a charge like that.

Hey I NEVER wanted Cruella in my life either, but I'm STILL fighting her even when she's NOT HERE physically!

22. If Murtha did nothing wrong, he should have welcomed releasing the tape
Saying "I'm not interested...at this point" when offered a bribe doesn't exactly paint the picture of an ethical Congressman.

And if Hoyer did that, he's an asshat, and you wonder why Pelosi wanted Murtha, if that turns out to be true.
