CNN host to first-ever Muslim congressman: "Prove to me that you're not working with our enemies."
On the November 14 edition of his CNN Headline News program, Glenn Beck interviewed Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN), who became the first Muslim ever elected to Congress on November 7, and asked Ellison if he could "have five minutes here where we're just politically incorrect and I play the cards up on the table." After Ellison agreed, Beck said: "I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, 'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.' " Beck added: "I'm not accusing you of being an enemy, but that's the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way."

23. LOL!
Glenn Beck would do a much greater service to society if he'd shut his mouth and get a job cleaning the latrines in the CNN headquarters bathrooms. Nobody else so consistently shoves his foot straight into his mouth.

Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 09:34 PM by Vorta
to denouce the racism, sexism, and homophobia of the Nation Of Islam?

Would we not expect a former member of the KKK to denounce the worst aspects and perceptions of that association?

edit- oops, I forgot anti-semitism and general obnoxiousness.

18. I disagree. Nation of Islam is not a religion, it's a denomination.
So it would be more like asking a congressman with a former association with a white supremicist Christian sect, aka Christian Identity Movement to denounce his association.

55. Really, you need to find better sources than Pipes, Malkin, and Horowitz...
Yeah, I googled, apparently we Democrats elected "CAIR's Congress" who will do terrible things like gut the Patriot Act, and get rid of racial profiling in airports, oh the HORROR!

CAIR itself is affiliated with that terrorist organization known as the ACLU, the Hate filled NAACP, in addition to the religious extremist group the National Council of Churches. Let's not forget Amnesty International, infamous for its opposition against Human rights.

By the way, pretty much all the above is sarcasm, if you didn't see it, I suggest you get glasses.

As far as NOI, Ellison already stated that the ONLY time he affiliated with them was for the Million Man March, which, by the way, was a March organized by MANY groups, some good, some not so good.

I don't deny that CAIR is a controversial organization, but there seems to be misinformation on both sides of the aisle on this one. I won't judge Ellison because of it.

I wouldn't call it sarcasm. I would call it irrelevant. I don't care if CAIR takes cherry pies to old ladies in nursing homes, if they are connected to terrorism or supporting the attacks on Israel, a US congressman who glad hands them is going to be asked tough questions about it. The sad part would be if we had to rely on the likes of Beck and Malkin to do it.

71. You Will Have To Do Better Than This, Mr. Vorta
If you seriously mean to sustain this position.

C.A.I.R. spokes-persons often say things not to my own taste, but they fall within the bounds of reasonable discourse in a free society. There is no serious allegation of connections to "terrorism" on the part of that organization.

Rep. Ellison is a convert to Islam, with no connection whatever to the N.O.I. of Farrakhan, and that body is somewhat seperate, to put it mildly, from the main stream of Islamic life. Rep. Ellison is in no way required to jump through any hoops on the matter at the present day. It is quite appropriate, by now, for there to be some measure of representation for the country's Moslem population in the Congress: roughly a quarter of one percent of the House, which this gentleman amounts to, runs a bit below their proportion of the populace.

To treat as in any way legitimate the line pressed by Beck and Malkin will not do at all: their comments are simply politicized bigotry, and nothing more.

With that disclaimer - "I'm not really asking you this" - it just doesn't make any sense, what he said. Why even say it, unless that's really what he was trying to say? That's just so inane that it's crazy. It seems to me that he really did mean to ask that. I find that reprehensible, although I suppose I shouldn't have to denounce it - the statement kind of condemns itself as despicable. Nothing more really need be said.

If he wants to hint at subtle accusations of anti Americanism, and treasonous activity, he should make clear what he's alluding to.

Of course Beck is a fucking moron and has no evidence that an American born and raised, probably here for several generations, is "helping the enemy" or any of those things.

Ellison should ask Beck if he can prove that he's not affiliated with the KKK, Erik Rudolph, and McVeigh.

26. But that's the point. We have demanded explanation from politicians for their associations.
We jump all over politicians for meeting with, shaking hands with, hugging, and being photographed with the likes of Falwell, Robertson, and the Bob Jones crowd. We do ask about former associations with the CCC, KKK, Opus Dei, and a host of other organisations. Hell, we've tried to tank someone for belonging to a country club who in their right of free association choose to limit membership to members of their sex, ethnicity, or class.

So why should this man get a pass?

you equate association with a religion with association with hate-groups. Which is blantantly and willfully ignorant. A man or woman's religion and belief is his/her own - and has nothing to do with me whatsoever. That's a principle this nation was founded on.

So along a similar line of reasoning why should you get a pass.

Who did you vote for president in 04?

I feel certain that were I to run for office, my previous associations and my supporters would be of interest to the public and the news.

My point is that the US has never been that; the fact that the Puritans immediately set up a religious despotism more severe than even that they were fleeing really says it all, as does your casual dismissal of this obvious problem with your idea.

America has a 250 year history of religious intolerance.

And it's sad that we've never lived up to our founding principles of tolerance for diversity of religious opinion. Of course, saying that in response to this story sort of lets CNN off the hook a little bit for merely reflecting the mood of the country, don't you think.

Actually, I'm not going to back off from my original statement. I've been to a lot of other countries, and I find that tolerance for different religions is actually much higher than in many European and Asian countries and I think part of the reason is that that's a founding principle of US government, even though we could do better.

74. You're acting surprised that a Muslim was questioned about his patriotism?
Thirty years ago, we wouldn't have this problem, because a Muslim would never have been elected in the first place, and the only time you saw a black Muslim on TV was when they had one on to beat up.

If anything, the very fact that this incident is causing controversy shows us that we are more tolerant today than at any time in this nation's history.

75. I'm equating that with betraying the principles upon which the country is founded
regardless of whether, historically, this is a rule or an exception...

77. No, you said "America was a haven for free expression once"
That is a historical claim, not a statement of principle. Whatever you say now, that's what you said then.

43. CNN: Prove to me you're not a buch of neoconservative whores
Then we'll talk whether any Muslim is a legitimate terror suspect.

49. CNN is ENTIRELY responsible for this travesty. Don't tlet thet "opinions expressed
on this program" crap let them off.

They hired the creep knowing full well what his background was and even exploited his controversy.

58. I was just watching Glenn Beck talk with Netanyahu
and thinking what a tool he was to be listening to someone like that. However, I guess this really confirms it. Thanks for the story. I think it's really shocking.

59. Oh. Glenn Beck. Well that explains it. I keep forgetting he's on CNN.

Destroys most of their credibility by his mere presence.

67. We need to start a petition on-line to get Beck off of CNN and off of tv, period.
He has made no effort to benefit healing the rift between the Republicans, who just lost their ass in the elections, and the Democrats, who will try to save what's left of America.

We need to get Glenn Beck off of CNN.

CNN doesn't need to promote that type of bigotry.

Just take off the mic, get up and walk out. He tolerated it, and I find that amazing.
