A 'can't fail' surefire way to counter the 'Tax and Spend Democrats' meme ....
Call for an overhaul of the tax rates and give a **substantial** tax cut (ideally and complete elimination) to the lower brackets .... pick a number .... $50K.

Reduce the marginal rates on all income up to some more substantial, but still middle class income .... again pick a number ..... $150K.

Tack a FRIGGIN DRACONIAN rate onto the top earners.

Close corporate loopholes.

Start from a revenue neutral position so we can demonstrate clearly our actual tax REDUCTION on most citizens. then jack things up to pay for healthcare for everyone ..... but still keep the rate BELOW where it is now.

Tie a leash around the SecDef's neck and keep that spending in line ... which means cut it.

1. The spending should be on long range infrastructure projects
...which create employment and entrepreneurial small business development and wipe out all of the hedge fund and financial derivative derived gambling debts.

the Pentagon guys in a sub committee hearing (Senate I think) talking about upgrading their procurement systems to actually be able to track expenses and where the $$$ goes

it sounded like a complete nightmare, multiple systems that don't talk to each other, every branch has multiple systems in place that *still* give no cash tracking or accountability

my point is, if we can get some decent accounting software in place we might find that DOD doesn't need that obscene amount of money

4. Here's a bill worth considering:
Senate version by Ron Wyden, House version by Rahm Emanuel. (See http://wyden.senate.gov /)
It would:
1. Set the standard deduction at $26,000 for a head of household.
2. Treat investment income (dividends, cap gains) equally to wage income. This is big, as currently capital gains is taxed at only 15%, whereas wages and salaries are taxed at much higher rates.
3. Keep mortgage interest, education, IRA and health deductions as they are.
4. Repeal the ATM entirely
5. 10% refundable credit for state and local taxes paid.
6. Have 3 income tax rates: 15% on the first $25,000 of taxable income (income minus deductions), 25% on the next $95,000 and 35% on the amount over $120,000.

Wyden claims that everyone with wage and salary income of less than $150,000 would see a decrease in taxes, and that it would reduce the deficit by $100 billion/year.
