The talks between the United Steelworkers and Goodyear collapsed again Friday because the company came to the table with the same old positions and did not address keeping North American plants open while fully funding retiree benefits. USW spokesman Wayne Rannick.
: “They were presenting us with the same proposals. They were slightly tweaked, slightly modified. But basically nothing very different. We told the company we would return to Cincinnati when they had something new to show us.”
The strike is costing Goodyear an estimated $30 million a week and the United Steelworkers have a strike fund of roughly $150 million and the ability according to the union to sustain the strike for two years if necessary. Rannick says the strike has crippled production at Goodyear.
: “The company is talking about being able to run their production at 50 percent. We believe that’s a totally inaccurate number. Our estimates, based on the people most familiar with the facilities monitoring the situation are that maybe the production capacity is at about ten percent right now.”
