Does Al Gore's PMRC Past Scare Anybody Else?
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 11:40 PM by TheJollyNihilist
PMRC declared war on the entertainment industry back in the '80s, and Al Gore himself was instrumental in that fight. Both he and Tipper railed against music and movies that, in their judgment, were offensive. Then, in 2000, Gore selected anti-Hollywood Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Lieberman, at that time, was a member of the pro-censorship organization Parents Television Council.

I do like Al Gore, and agree with him on many issues, but this is a major thing for me. I consider myself a Free Expression absolutist, and any tendencies toward censorship probably would disqualify my support. Certainly I wouldn't vote for the GOP candidate, but I might be forced to vote Green.

Does Al Gore's long history of opposing "offensive" Hollywood entertainment scare anybody else? Do you think President Gore would declare "war" on Eminem, splatter movies, profanity in primetime, etc.? Or, as I fervently hope, has he changed his pro-censorship ways?

1. You know he wanted warning labels not censorship. Why the
inflammatory language?

4. It went beyond that, though.
Tipper Gore wrote a screed in the '80s that demonized Hollywood and its entertainment. It wasn't just a call for labels, it was an expression of outrage against movies like "Friday the 13th" and "I Spit on Your Grave." Lieberman, too, was very outspoken, including handing out "Golden Sewer" awards for entertainment media he found distasteful.

This is an issue about which I'm very passionate. As I wrote, I'm a Free Expression absolutist. I don't even support the FCC's authority to regulate the public air's content.

6. Nope, as a parent I appreciate a ratings system.
Censorship not about giving people an educated "choice." Ratings leave the choice to the consumer.

7. Let's cross that bridge when we come to it.
The day after Al Gore is inaugurated president, then let's be on our guard that he might call for more warning labels on entertainment.

I'm more worried about Republicans lack of diplomacy making the world more dangerous militarily.

8. No -millions of the poorest people in the world
stand to lose their homes, lives and way of living due to climate change...(not to mention species loss etc.)
All indications are that a nation with the sort of ecological footprint America has, needs someone really proactive on environmental issues.

So here is where I prioritize and decide that many other issues are secondary to this one at this point in time.
Just my two cents.

13. BTW - how do you feel about the war on Christmas and the war in
Iraq, and the war on the lower 99%?

Just asking.

Cause if you throw your vote away on someone who has zero chance of winning, and let another POS inbred POS republican frat boy into the white house, thats what you are gonna get.
