Poll question: Rangel and the draft - a poll. |

Just trying to gauge what the situation is. Explanations encouraged.

I agree with Rangel, and I have kids, one of whom is near draftable age.

3. So that would be the third choice, no? |
|
Thanks, and I don't think Rangel is doing this to get your draftable age child drafted. He's making a point. I even wonder how much press this will get in the coming week.

2. I think he's avoiding the core issue. |
|
The core issue is that we shouldn't be there at all, and while his intent as right, we should stay focused on that issue.

5. I have to agree we shouldn't be there, but until the current admin |
|
admits that, this is one avenue to take. Rangel will take a lot of poop for this comment, but it does keep Iraq on the front burner.

15. You can't force people to care |
|
You can say we should stay focused on the issue that we shouldn't be there at all, but even people who agree with you don't really care until it affects their own lives. Right now it doesn't.
The proposal of a draft should make at least some of them sit up and take notice.

6. People fail to understand that the reason young men still have to... |
|
register is that if the volunteer army can't deal with a given military situation the government can start drafting them to increase the army's manpower. I think if more people realized this they would'nt have been so eager to back Bush's clusterfuck of a war.

12. When There Was A Draft, Minority Men Largely Fought ... |

in disproportionate numbers. The draft did nothing to stop that. And a new draft will do nothing as well.
Bush's daughters will still be getting drunk and celebrating the deaths of poor youth.

9. No because it may look like a good idea in theory but... |
|
I honestly do not think it will work. The Republicans can work it to their advantage and especially if it backfires. What would you all say then?

11. I don't agree with the idea that my generation is comprised of political pawns |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 02:38 AM by WildEyedLiberal
Because I don't think my friends and family should have to go suit up and die for Bush's lie. Do some people not realize the human cost a draft would have? Every death in Iraq is a tragedy, yet some here would willingly inflict that tragedy on more American families just to make a political point?
I find this disturbing on so many levels, and I think Rangel is an idiot for giving the MSM whores a chance to say "Democrats favor escalating the war in Iraq."

|
He does have a valid point about the draft. I am ambivalent about his tactics.
