how do we reframe this? I understand what Rangel is saying here, but you know how the fucking MSM will spin the shit out of this one, and we'll be playing defense for weeks.

1. of course, the MSM is one of the primary reasons it was a stupid tactic
IMO.

Just sayin'.

Didn't they stop and consider that the rethug friendly MSM would spin this as such?

2. No - the Dems want the Reps to put up or pull out
They went into this invasion without enough manpower using the back-door draft but then they won't institute a real up front honest draft because they can't figure out a way to only draft the poor and leave their "base" untouched.

4. We need a little more 'coordination' on the public front like the Republicans. (flame on!)
In the same way Bush rejected everything that Clinton did was WRONG, rejecting everything Republicans do is wrong as well.

I think we're smart enough to see what doesn't work (corruption, cronyism, etc) and what DOES.

This Rangel episode *DOESN'T* WORK to win the hearts and minds of the people to convince them we'll keep them out of harm's way.

I UNDERSTAND THE *INTENT*, but the RESULT is a media disaster which is going to make us play catch up and "I don't agree with my fellow congressman" for at least a week.

The fact is that Republicans have been better at controlling the media, and this debacle with Rangel is a good example of something that would have NEVER happened with Republicans.

I don't mind debate, open-tent, blaw, blaw, blaw. But there is no way Rangel should have been allowed to be framed as speaking for our party in suggesting a draft.

7. Range is a very, very canny guy.
Let me suggest that he's not the one who's dumb.

15. How about a letter to the editor framing it the right way
if the majority of people here wrote letters condemning the press for getting it wrong or simply just stating the correct meaning it would help.

5. It's too late. We're stuck with it. We've handed them
the issue on a silver platter.

8. Please
This "all is lost" and defeatist crap gets old and is quite obnoxious. Sit back and let Congressman Rangel do his job ... he has my full confidence and his strategy is shrewd. The Put Up or Shut TF Up slogan works for me.

6. one does not reframe when one has the power
let them spin all they want. we as a nation must decide that if we are to wage wars we can not rely on a volunteer army. a volunteer army only works in peace time and since we are in a never ending war we need a no deferment draft.

10. Well said
This isn't partisan, because there are plenty of Democratic hawks. This is a basic decision we need to make as a country.
We now have a legislative branch that may allow the debate to take place. We need to think it through as a matter of policy in relation to Bushes pre-emptive war policy.

9. You can't reframe stupidity
If you want to stop the war then cut-off the funding. We have the pursestrings now so we can do that. This whole draft thing is just plain moronic.

11. Rangel framed it perfectly
He's got everyone scared shitless.
What he's done is reframe the war debate.
The media has been framing it as cut & run or stay the course or phased withdrawal over many years starting with a 20,000 troop increase.
Rangel reframed it to: cut & run or we draft your kids.

12. I agree with you. If Rangle did this as a political maneuver, than he
underestimated the media spin on this and how the public will perceive it. Personally, he should of just kept his mouth shut. I would be less harsh, but he has done this before.
