2. You will always have pockets of very strict Pubs. I live in Ga. and
a group of us tried VERY HARD campaigning for a Dem Gov. and a replacement of our Pub Rep. here in Hall County, but it's the same thing in Ga. as in Tn. Once you got outside of Atlanta, (or Memphis) the folks here are very loyal Pubs and they can't ever even tell you why!

29. That's exactly it! They can't tell you why.
I ask every single one of them I meet. I ask if they enjoy all the things those Republicans supposedly "representing" them have done and you should hear the bitching and moaning. I usually cut them off and simply say then why do you still continue to vote for people who are out of touch with what you really want? They never have an answer.

Fucking morans!

5. .
Further, this map showed the house races and someone who votes for a Dem for this race, might have another choice for the Senator (or President..). I guess that's not unusual in the South with some local Dem incumbents who have had that seat for quite some time.
The Dems won 5 from the 9 seats in TN. The worst result of these 5 was 60%, the others all received more than 2/3 of the votes.

Ignorance runs rampant in this state. Let's see... I'm going to vote for the big business candidate who will represent my poor rural white ass in Washington! Sheesh...

13. The arguments rooted in abandoning the South are due to the Electoral College
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 01:34 PM by Selatius
Mississippi's bluest counties are either on the coast or in the west, the Delta region. They are predominantly inhabited by minority Blacks and are very poverty-stricken. The Electoral College should be dumped. Otherwise, you will never fully defeat the argument in favor of "dump the South" as a result. The margin in the last presidential election was something like 40% for Kerry, the rest for Bush. In the last election, the coastal counties went for Bush. This time, they are much bluer. That was because of Katrina, no doubt.

I oughta know; I live here in Mississippi.

14. Much of the North was 45% or more for Bush, a few states were Red
I posted this on another thread. Many northern "blue" states went 47, 48% for Bush. Even Rhode Island was 39%.

Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee--these barely went for Bush, as well. We're talking about a difference of a few percentage points--this is one of the many, many reasons I find it shocking that DU'ers can have an earnest conversation about abandoning the South.

16. Right. It's the same thing that happened with Reagan's red wave. Based
on a simple red/blue map where 50%+1 determines the color, the map is incredibly deceiving.

The purple map is the best and it shows that the country is pretty much evenly split everywhere.

21. All that is true, but Washington insiders look at just the numbers
Dem advisors are going to advise candidates to go for states that are close to 50-50 or more in their favor. They quickly write off states like Mississippi because the split is often 60-40 against the Dem. I remember in 2004 John Kerry didn't visit Mississippi; however, after the election when Dean became Chairman of the DNC, Dean actually did pay a visit to Mississippi.

Those election maps above show a purple America. Unfortunately, the Electoral College only recognizes red or blue and nothing in between. If we transitioned to the popular vote from the EC, then candidates would have to campaign for every single vote everywhere, not just in battleground states. In such a situation, every individual vote really affects the final outcome, not just individual votes cast in battleground states like Florida or Ohio.

18. Southwest Virginia is blue-this is a new and huge development
The Va. Democratic party has been working its tail off down there for the last 4 years and it looks like it is really paying off. Mark Warner did very well there and that was a big contributor to his win and it appears that it was for Webb as well. This area is very God and guns and this is where Allen felt safe enough to make his macaca statement.

Very big development.

I'd say the "50 State Strategy" is a totally viable plan.

What a difference from the 2004 election when the whole country looked red except the coastal regions and upper mid West. Just wait till 2008!It'll br mostly blue...if we pay our cards right. Keep the faith.!

20. Nice map
I set it as my background.

It's nice to see a map that shows how much more purple this country is than the Presidential election results maps indicates.

One thing: it looks like this one gives us New Mexico's first district which, unless there have been some recent developments- and that I'd love to hear about if there have been, we actually lost in a very close race. Which sucks 'cause I was looking forward to having Madrid in there instead of Wilson...

23. The Santa Fe New Mexican says.....
http://www.freenewmexican.com/2006elections

ALBUQUERQUE -- Republican Rep. Heather Wilson retained her seat Friday, narrowly winning a fifth term in Congress by defeating Democrat Patricia Madrid and overcoming election-season sentiment that battered GOP incumbents nationwide.

Wilson won New Mexico's 1st Congressional District after Bernalillo County Clerk Mary Herrera released the county's final unofficial count Friday night. The county's canvassing board is expected to reconvene Monday to certify the results.

26. Lots of red in N KS and E MT
What's up with north central and northwest Kansas and eastern Montana? Even Nebraska is more purple than those places. Granted most everyone in Montana lives towards the mountains and there is not much around Glasgow.
