How many more DEM seats do we need to have a VETO PROOF majority?

Wonder is this is a plausible possibility for Congress in 08?

EDIT: Of course, this question would have a different slant with a DEM President! This is probably easier to achieve in 08 then being VETO PROOF :kick:

1. not nearly plausible
there just aren't enough winnable seats to achieve this. Winning the Presidency will be a far easier task.

2. Depends on if you count Lieberman & Sanders
16 in the Senate if you do include them.

3. I believe you need 2/3rds in both chambers.
67/100 in the Senate. 16 more.

292/435 in the House. 60 more.

10. That's assuming all Democratic members of Congress vote the same way
Historically, they don't.

4. 67 is what you'd need for a veto proof majority in the Senate.
What's the number you'd need for a veto proof majority in the House? Is it something like 290?

5. We'd need 2/3 in each house
So "just" 16 more senators, and 59 more house seats and we're there....

6. Thanks. Looks like a DEM Pres is the easier road.

7. Let's put it this way...
what are the chances of picking up ANY seats in Congress if the public votes in another repuke President?

Pretty much zero. If the country goes for a repuke, there isn't any point in thinking about a veto proof majority... we'll be lucky to hold to a simple majority.

And if a Democratic President wins in 2008 we don't need a veto proof majority.

8. 2/3 of the House and 2/3 of the Senate for overrides
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 04:18 PM by roamer65
...so 290 reps and 67 senators...hmmm...one can hope, but it will take landslides of 1932-34 proportion to do it. The one positive is that I have heard about 2/3 of the senators up for re-election in '08 are Rethugs.
