Let's say thanks in support of our troops send a free card |
|
No matter how we feel about the war, I'm sure most will find this a wonderful thing to do. http://www.letssaythanks.com/Home1280.htmlPick a card. Xerox will print it and send it on it's way to one of our soldiers in harms way.

I appreciate them and honor their courage and sacrifices but I cannot thank them for doing a job that I did not want done in the first place.

4. Sorry, I won't participate. |
|
If they were draftees, I might feel differently.
I don't want anyone, particularly young men with guns in their hands pointed at innocent people, to think that I condone what they are doing and why. The whole thing is a sham, and while I know that most of them don't want to be there, they are there voluntarily. Many of them joined after 9/11. Many of them think they are "doing the right thing" by "serving their country." I don't want anyone to think that I agree that that's what they are doing.
Now, if you give me a list of deserters in prison, I might send one of them a card...

7. Thank them for what? For being hapless pawns exploited by amoral sociopaths? |
|
They have my pity, but there's nothing that they're doing that I'm thankful for. They are just one more set of victims of the grand geostrategic plans of delusional imperialists. You don't thank people for being victims, you do all you can to break the delusions that led to their victimhood.

What should we thank them for? 655,000 dead Iraqi civilians? A nation destroyed? Haliburton and KBR profiteering? Maybe they were just following orders, but the orders were a war crime. I will not thank them for that.

|
If our asshole politicians would actually send them to do that.

12. I didn't expect this at all |

I remember watching Fahrenheit 9/11 and seeing the poor that couldn't find a job signing up for duty. Some of the replies to this thread remind me of people calling Nam vets baby killers. A soldier goes where he or she is ordered to go. Being far from home. A large number still in their teens. Not being able to tell roadside bombers and snipers from the friendlies. Crimes by a few should not taint the majority. Maybe just be thankful whistle blowers on torture and it's methods changed attitudes of vast numbers about the war. I sent a card.

come up with the notion that some in the Democratic party are anti-troops. It is the same ones that will complain each time hannity or Coulter take to theTV and say that the Democrats are against the troops. Coulter and Hannity will even use some of their words to tar the democratic party. Dear God.... Nothing wrong with being a pacifist or anti-war..but just don't take it out on the troops. They are the first ones that would rush to your defense if a hurricane flooded your city, or if a terrorist attack came to your city..of if an ice strom took out your power. Stop giving the right wing ammunition, frame your opposition to war around logical and well thought out arguments, and stop attacking the troops. Please.

But I do care what that American public that just voted us back into power thinks. The majority of Americans are against the war.. and the majority support the troops. Ignore that and we are on a fast track right back into the minority.

Back in the 80's in Detroit, no jobs were to be found and my parents couldn't afford to send me to college. I enlisted in the Marine Corps and I am thankful for the time that I spent there. Many of us regular Marines simply wanted a better life; that's all. These reservists that are currently stationed in Iraq got much more than they bargained for. I'm sure that most just wanted some extra cash for college and never expected the quagmire that Iraq and Afghanistan turned out to be.
I'm sure that many wished that they could be home with their families tomorrow. I would be happy to send them an email wishing them well and hoping for their safe return.

20. I don't "support the troops..." |
|
...if those troops are involved in committing war crimes.
True, many of the people in the military joined to do good work, and I have nothing but respect for them for that. However, they are human beings and citizens of this nation. They are not simply pawns to be moved around at the pleasure of the president. If the president decides to use them to commit war crimes, they are capable of saying NO! and not participating. Granted, there will be consequences to pay for doing that, but if each of those human beings and citizens does NOT say NO! and refuse to participate, then they do not deserve my "support." Sorry, but it's pretty straighforward. If Hannity or some other right-wing douchebag wants to spin this into "Liberals hate the troops" then so be it.
Give me a list of citizens who enlisted and then refused to participate in the current war crimes, and I will send them a card. In prison, or in Canada, or wherever they may be...
