Michael Moore Extends an Olive Branch
Here's Michael Moore's "Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives", published today in newspapers across the country. Personally, I have a problem with point #1, but overall it seems like a good summary of what we can look forward to.

An olive branch

BY MICHAEL MOORE
http://www.michaelmoore.com

I would like to extend an olive branch. Those of you who consider yourselves conservative and usually vote Republican have not had a very good couple of weeks. Trust me, I know how this feels.

What I don't want is for you to drop into the deep funk we liberals have been in for two-plus decades. Yes, your Republican revolution is over, but hang in there. And do not despair. I, and the millions who voted for Democrats, have no interest in revenge for the last 12 years. In fact, let me make 12 promises as to how we will treat you, the minority, in the coming years.

Thus, here is ``A Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives'':

1) We will always respect you. We will never, ever, call you ''unpatriotic'' simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2) We will let you marry whomever you want (even though some among us consider your Republican behavior to be ''different'' or ``immoral'').

Whom you marry is none of our business. Love, and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3) We will not spend your grandchildren's money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4) When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on some amateur Power Point presentation cooked up by men who have never been to war.

5) When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. When stem-cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that afflict you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6) When we clean up our air and water, you, too, will be able to breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water. When we put an end to global warming, you will no longer have to think about buying oceanfront property in Yuma.

7) Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8) We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9) We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, take up another sport. In the meantime, we will arm the deer to make it a fairer fight.

10) When we raise the minimum wage, we will raise it for your employees, too. They will use that money to buy more things, which means you will get the money back! And when women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11) We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't practice those beliefs. In fact, we will seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs (''Blessed are the peacemakers,'' ''Love your enemies,'' ''It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God'' and ``Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me''). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America; He blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting here at home.

12) We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and break the law. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side first. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it.

We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.

1. Curious why you have a problem with #1
Problem with freedom? If someone disagrees, is it OK to call them unpatriotic? Shouldn't people be respected as individuals? Isn't dissent and free exchange of ideas a good thing? How does anyone grow if all are alike? Lock step is fine, if it is a particular lock step?

Just wondering what problems one could have with the concept of recognizing individuals and respecting them.

You may be different, but I have no respect for those that would destroy the US.

Welcome to DU :hi: I agree with you wholeheartedly. In my opinion far too many repuglicans have earned nothing but disrespect.

Well thought-out, and phrased. Mellow-Moore. Excellent!

4. A noble sentiment
But I don't know about this. When dealing with Publicans, fairness is a one way street. Just as an example, maybe we shouldn't move too quickly to change all of the house rules that ruthlessly supress the minority party. After all, Publicans worked real hard for 12 years to set them up. And I'm wondering if Pelosi is doing the right thing pushing a centrist theme. Since Saint Ronnie's time Publicans have pushed the center pretty far to the right and Clinton didn't do much to rectify that.

Sorry, I know I'm rambling. I think I'm under the influence of that stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy. I think it's called Ambien or something like that.

30. And when the repukes retake congress - they will revert to even WORSE behavior than they did in the
last 10

And they will learn they can treat Democrats like DIRT and GET AWAY WITH IT!

I want to put a "hold" on any changes to the congressional rules and wait for the first repuke to scream "unfair!" It should come in the first minute of Democratic control...

5. Number 4 includes a rather weak promise
We promise never to send your kids off to war based on some amateur Power Point presentation cooked up by men who have never been to war.

Theoretically, one could keep that promise while sending off their kids to war based on an amateur presentation cooked up by men who have never been to war. One could simply avoid using Power Point and instead use some other software.

I didn't bookmark all the threads but I remember it was a big controversy around here after it appeared on his website shortly after The Witch posted hers. I think someone found a video from 2004.

24. Possibly so. I read those threads,
and the sentiments are certainly not new to Mr. Moore's writing or his filmography. I'm not sure how it could have been in the format of a "Don't worry, now that we're in power, we won't hurt you" message, though--or a "Dear Disheartened Conservatives"--since it was Dems that were somewhat disheartened in '04.

It may well be coincidence; a lot of people are thinking along the lines of "let's not be vindictive and blow it", and perhaps the Witch and Moore just happened to use similar phraseology. But there were a lot of remarkably similar phrases, not just concepts.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2716486

I really don't know what to think about it. I do like the Witch's version better, only because it is kinder, and Moore's #9 is a slap in the face to most gun-owning Dems and indies (the Witch's didn't include any slams).

Maybe Michelle Malkin will pick it up again and spew it across her hysterical right-wing hate site. But then, Michelle is a big Second Amendment absolutist, so perhaps you're OK with that.....

#9 is clueless...possession of an automatic weapon without Federal permission (BATFE Form 4) has been a Federal felony for 72 years now, and only 1 in 5 gun owners is a hunter. Guess he wasn't paying attention when Feinstein handed the repubs the House and Senate in '94, or the presidency in '00 and '04.

Dems and the Gun Issue - Now What? (2004)

I know this is satire, but it's BS like this that props up the whole "Dems'll take yer guns" meme. :grr:

20. That'd be 10-year Federal felony, and I have no problem with that law.
What I DO have a problem with is saying that I can't own a small-caliber, non-automatic civilian target rifle because of the way the stock is shaped, or that I can't own an ordinary handgun. I don't hunt, so I don't care if I'm "allowed" to own a high-powered hunting rifle.

Tongue in cheek he makes a great point. Cleaning up their mess is only half the chore. We must heal the nation as well. The Conservative experiment in hatred has failed- we have to put things back together with focus, discipline, compassion and inclusion.
