Poll Says Majority Of Christian Right Won't Vote For Romney, A Mormon

<snip>

As JABBS noted last year, the Southern Baptist Convention website has characterized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a "cult." The influential Christian right group Focus on the Family declares that "God cannot be identified . . . with the Mormon religion's notion of god."

1. Baptists, especially southern baptists, in my experience.
don't care for Mormons at all, even less than they like catholics.
I am not at all sure they could subjugate their revulsion in pursuit of a greater goal.

3. Romney/Gulianni would be better.
I would love to see the Southern Baptists deal with that combo.

4. They will still vote for Romney no matter what
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 11:08 AM by Joe Bacon
The bigots in the Southern Baptists will vote for Romney no matter what. They won't vote for the evil Hillary.

Are they gonna be in for a rude awakening when Hillary kick's Romney's ass so hard, he will go into orbit

11. They will stay home
Much of the Repug base is in favor of some kind of religious theocracy. No way will they accept a leader who is a Mormon.

Interestingly enough, the Mormons that I know aren't that conservative. Our neighbors down the street voted for Nader. Another guy I worked with was very anti-Bush. We would exchange Bush jokes and talk about the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert. I suppose it's like any other religion; there are people who follow it to the extreme like the Opus Dei Catholics and othere who aren't quite so out there.

5. Mit Romney
I've met Mit on two occassions, and he's basically a good guy who would most likely do a good job. The Mormon thing is a problem and is not going to go away. Ignorance is bliss. Did yall know that Harry Reed is also a Mormon?

7. That Is Pretty Widely Known, Sir
And hardly a problem for people who view religion as a private matter of conscience, and do not subscribe to the view there is only one true path to salvation....

25. there is nothing good about Romney and he isn't doing a good job
he is willing to make the people of Massachsuettes suffer so he can have a chance at winning right wing primary votes.

8. We are all entitled to our hereditary superstitions aren't we? Some are just
a lot sillier than others...

Personally, I love the Mormon Temple garments -- not just the magical drawers, but the whole kit: white baker's hat, "apron" of "fig leaves", etc.!

But I still want an answer as to what they feed that giant golden salamander and what it ate when it was underground in the cow field in New York! Why won't SLC send me an answer? Why?!

Sorry, time for a Coke and a smoke, I love a good old fashioned southern Episcopalian breakfast.

10. Not my intention
My appology, it was not my intention to turn this string into a debate on Mormonism, and I hope it doesn't go that direction. And I was certianly not calling non-mormons ignorant. I'm very firm believer in separation of chruch and state. To clarify the reference to ingnorant is directed to those who insist on linking religion and politics.

I don't really want to defend Romney. But they're perhaps even bigger douchebags.

20. As a former Republican,
I think Romney is a total non-starter for the Republican nomination. Republican primaries are dominated in large part by Christian fundamentalists. It is true that Romney thinks that he is a Christian fundamentalist. Mormons consider themselves to be Christians. However, it is my understanding that most other Christians do not think that Mormons are Christians.

However, at this point I must admit that I'm Jewish, not speaking from personal experience in this regard. Still, based on my experience with talking to Christians, I do think most of them feel that Mormonism is not real Christianity. Since it attempts to be real Christianity, in effect, it is seen as heresy.

23. Good! I like it when the superstitious lunatics fight amongst themselves...
I always try to sow discord in their midst. Last year, I worked with a conservative baptist and a conservative catholic and spent a great deal of time pointing out that they both can't be "right" By the time I got through, they were eying each other with skepticism. All in a day's work.

28. I read this as "The Christian Right won't vote for him, because he's a MORON"
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 01:13 PM by LeftishBrit
and then thinking, "When did that ever stop the Christian Right from voting for someone?"

According to my friends in Massachusetts, Romney is certainly a moron as well as a Mormon, and I hope he doesn't get to be President!
