Is Putin Really A Friend In The "War On Terror?"

<snip>

President Bush has called Russia "a strong ally in ... fighting the war on terror," and "a strong and viable partner with the United States."

It's great spin, especially when accompanied by warm handshakes like the one in the photo at right. But there's no reason to believe the relationship between Bush and Putin has translated into any kind of partnership on Iraq or Iran.

3. Pooty-Poot & Dubya look the other way
They know to what extent the other is a threat to humanity, but what can you do?

4. The Russians are looking out after their own interests.
They certainly helped out in the initial overthrow of the Taliban in Afganistan. They had a score to settle and thier own terrorist problems in Chechnya to deal with.

On the other hand having the U.S. get bogged down in Iraq can't be bad for the Russians at all. They can sit on the sidelines and watch us get into the same sort of mess that they got into in Afganistan. The resulting high energy prices are very good for them too.
