MSNBC: We are now declaring Iraq to be in a civil war
(Retired) General Wayne Downing and Amy Rorbach (sp?) were discussing the situation in Iraq. Rorbach said that it is now MSNBC's official position that they will heretofor refer to the sitation in Iraq as a Civil War. Downing agreed with the characterization.

Downing went on to say that the situation is out of our control. But then he comes back and says we can't leave just yet.

Oh really?? Can you articulate why we should stay?

I'm not quarreling with Downing, per se. He doesn't set policy, he just talks about it. But come on, General. What's the mission? What's the goal? What's the end game?

4. DU is More Informative than MSNBC...... LOL
We called this almost 6 months ago! Others warned this would happen a couple years ago.... and Bush and his people didn't? I find that all hard to believe unless they are THAT stupid.

What's even worse, is the same media that created Bush's bullshit persona is NOW saying this is a Civil War! Give me a fucking break! Our media is worse than a sham... it's culpable in this war.

7. Culpable is an understatement. They have been
pushing this war since before it started just like they have tried to prop up the Chimpster throughout his tenure. The public spoke on 11/7 but the media are not listening.

3. Wow, us invading Iraq resulted in a civil war?
Because of the divisive nature and deep rooted history of that country's different religious/ethnic groups? Who could have predicted such a thing? If only there were some historical warning signs that this would happen, and if only there were people who could have pointed such a thing out before we embarked on this little misadventure.

yes - our invasion resulted in civil war

no - our invasion had nothing to do with the civil war, it's all Iran's fault

12. no kidding
So many of here and elsewhere shouted this before the war, but we were labeled unpatriotic, terrorist sympathizers, blah blah blah.

I almost threw something at the TV today while watching Tweety on MSNBC. He was going on and on about the neocons, the war we shouldn't have waged, etc.

Yes, he stood against the war at first, but then he caved. Who can ever forget that slobbering moment during dimson's 'mission accomplished' fiasco.

I am struggling against going back to this mom group I used to belong to but left during the run up to the war because of the rampant stupidity over there. "I want to scream I F****** told you so, you IDIOTS"

All this needless carnage!!! We've made the world far more dangerous and we've hurt ourselves economically and on the security front.

DISGUSTING.

5. Now. . . given that the spin for why should stay has been
Edited on Mon Nov-27-06 09:28 AM by stellanoir
the echo chamber's incessant blather of "a civil war will break out and it will destabilize the region (as if our illegal invasion didn't do that already,)" one has to wonder why at this particular juncture in time are the war profiteers finally stating the obvious?

on edit-I just remembered hearing a discussion between some historical scholars who said when an occupying power leaves, civil war typically don't occur. hmmmmmm

8. I am afraid the mission is the same as the original reasons for the invasion
Edited on Mon Nov-27-06 09:44 AM by HereSince1628
To secure oil and to place a permanent, huge, military force capable of projecting power into SE Europe, western and central Asia, and Africa.

We are actually in Iraq and Afghanistan and our strategic planners are presented with the opportunity to establish megabases under rules that don't allow a host state to veto military operations such bases might engage in. That opportunity is unimaginable in other countries.

Because of that I suspect, despite being near desperate to step out of the middle of civil war, the military planners and politicians will never really want to leave and will likely advocate against complete withdrawal.

10. yes the US gov even in Reagan's time wanted to establish military bases
Once in Iraq, the view was to expand. However things have gone a little wrong......

meanwhile China is eating our lunch.

11. That's the only mission that makes sense
Building permanent military bases in order to control the oil is precisely what the US is doing in Iraq.
