Nancy Pelosi in a cat fight with Jane Harmon
What the HELL is wrong with the people who use such a derisive term for any (quite possibly imagined/fabricated) power play between these two US REPRESENTATIVES. The fact they're two women is BESIDE THE FUCKING POINT.

What's next? Death Match between Armani and Lord & Taylor?

Oh wait. I know. They're Democrats.

Arrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh!

(For the record, I don't favor Harmon **OR** Hastings.)

1. Link?
Reference? Btw, since we now have a female Speaker (or will have), get used to comments about cat fights, menopause, PMS, the style of shoes and who she's wearing.

2. Don't Favor Hastings Either
But sure as heck don't want Harman. Way too accomodating to * and the Publicans, not to mention that her ties to AIPAC are too close for comfort. How smart was it for her to be giving a dinner for AIPAC/pubs a week before our last election?

9. How can you say, as if it is carved in stone, that this is personal?
Harmon allowed all sorts of shit to go unchallenged when she was Ranking Member. She's simply not all that good for the post.

I *do* disagree with Pelosi about Hastings. Not too smart and a bad past.

10. Harmon is very well respected and qualified
The second in line has a huge ammount of ethical baggage. Pelosi's move is one of ego, plain and simple.

14. Harman Is Not Without Her Problems
Further, I question why, when in need of a lawyer, her choice is a big pub honcho. And while the allegations have not been substantiated this whole thing has a whiff about it. I read that a rep from Texas was being considered for the position. Neither Harman or Hastings would be a better way to go. The problem is that at some point in the past Harman did a finagle to take the position from Hastings, who by the way these things work should have had it, and the real problem is with the Black Caucus who is determined that Harman not be allowed to do it again.

Probe of Harman's AIPAC Ties Confirmed

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 25, 2006; Page A06

“Federal law enforcement sources confirmed yesterday that the FBI opened an investigation in 2005 into whether Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) improperly enlisted the aid of a pro-Israel lobbying group, but they cautioned that no evidence of wrongdoing was found.

The inquiry focused on whether Harman had made promises to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in exchange for its support of her desire to become chairman of the House intelligence committee if Democrats take control of the House, several law enforcement sources said.

Although the case is still considered open, officials said, the allegations have not been substantiated, and there has been no significant investigative activity on the issue in recent months. The inquiry was first reported by Time magazine.

Harman -- who has hired prominent GOP lawyer Theodore B. Olson, a former solicitor general -- told Time that the allegations were "irresponsible, laughable and scurrilous." cont…

30. Tradition says the chairmanship goes to the senior person
There is absolutely no good or compelling reason to break with tradition. A personal conflict is not an acceptable reason in my opinion.

22. I agree that I don't want either of them
Harmon has been too pro-war and too much of an apologist for the war hawks. Hastings has too much ethical baggage. I never thought he wasn't smart, though. Why do you think that?

On your larger issue: I clicked on this thread to explain why calling this a cat fight is demeaning. :-) I not surprised about the media's discussion of Pelosi but it's sad, nonetheless.

I was intending to suggest that the choice of Hastings wasn't smart ... not the man himself.

20. Does she have a tendancy to reward loyalty over picking the logical person for the job?
I hope I'm not seeing that rather Bush-like trait. But I'm reserving my judgement until these people actually take office.

17. A woman wrote that piece of trash?
It was horrible to read. Is Pelosi's whole existence now going to have to focus on purely the political? And in all actuality, after seeing how the media rips apart a woman for how she dresses, I think that her attire is important to think about at times. Gee, her whole political career could be ruined if she wore a funny hat when it was 20 below zero outside.

Pelosi will make many decisions we agree with and many we wrote agree with. Her being able to do that is part of her job. And personal feelings will come in play and that is true for males also. It depends on the degree. I think she has shown that she can take a stand, be over ruled and can be okay with that. That is what I think is the more important.

19. MSNBC's Amy Robish(sp) asked the Dem spokesman if Pelosi and Harmon
were in a "catfight". I don't know if the question was prepared for her to read.

She was immediately admonished about her usage of the word.

Joe Conason, though, thinks Pelosi is wrong in trying to replace Harmon with Hastings.

26. I agree with, and LOVE Joe Conason
Hastings will be a disaster. We will never hear the end of it on the ethical issues.

It's a tough decision but it has to be Harmon. Nancy simply has to bow to reality here. She is handing the Republicans a stick to beat us with, repeatedly, from here to eternity.

Some things you just have to let go and let be. Pick your fights, Dems. Pick your fights. This one ain't worth it.
