Rove couldn`t invent another Hero Costume grand enough to draw attention away from the absolute mess George Bush is standing in. I look at that putrid pool lapping around Bush`s armpits and winch at the little pieces of our shredded Constitution, the body parts from his war of choice, the bundles of taxpayer`s cash ready to be swept out to no-bid contractors, the few extra inches from the melting polar ice caps, zillions of pink slips readied for American workers, debris from Hurricane Katrina, bone fragments from Ground Zero, Cheney`s Iraqi oilfield maps, miles of bugging equipment, the dossiers on Quakers and Veterans for Peace, Abu Gharib electrodes, waterboards, homeless children, Saddam`s pistol and a number of other things too sullied to recognize.
Standing on the high ground, safe, dry and well fed is Bush`s herd of political appointments: his fundraisers, old family friends, PNACers, partners in crime and a variety of enablers who helped prop this man up throughout his sorry life. Don`t worry. They`re all okay. They don`t work in danger zones. It wouldn`t be good for their image. Imagine showing up at a posh Beltway restaurant with blood under the nails or vests in tatters?
Ever think you`ve endured "the last straw" then suddenly felt the weight of yet another one? That happened to me today after watching George Bush grip the podium in Estonia and fill the air with more asinine babble: Iraq is all al-Qaeda`s fault and we`re staying in Iraq until our victory is complete. Apparently Bush has replaced "adapt to win" with "stay the course." Makes me feel like my head is a ball in a ping-pong match. Boing, boing, boing. Stay the course. No, we`re not staying the course. Stay the course. Let`s hope Bush informed Tony Snow so he can pass the word around like a tray of petit fours.
Is this some kind of sick game? Which chickenhawk gets to decide how many more soldiers can be killed or maimed before we claim complete victory? Is there a formula for this? A flip chart? Could a focus group help? A Zogby poll? Will a soldier lose his legs or life a year from now? Two years? Is a real death for a fake win worth it?
